Who- Woodrow Wilson
Why- First off, do I think he was a good president. Not a great one. Was he prejudiced, did he massacre civil rights. Probally, and yes. However, was the first president of the US to openly advocate American exceptionalism. (Though this goes as far back as Monroe). And set a belief in place that all presidents whom succeeded have followed by. American exeptionalism has played a huge role on the international scale and would lead to many conflicts for better or for worse. From Wilson on, the United Stated has asssumed a radically new position in the world and has become a ubiqutious entity.
