I say offensive line, as a unit.

I'd say it is the starting roster, as a unit...

the offensive line should act as one unit, and having a solid o-line is completely critical...A mediocore QB/RB can be effective behind a great line, and a good QB/RB can be made ineffictive with a bad line.
Yes, a good O-line is critical to a teams success. Look at Denver's running game for proof. However, football is a team sport. To combine 4 positions and treat them as one in order to inflate their individual importantance is folly.

My vote is for QB

Well, ok, maybe I should have phrased the question what FACTOR is most important to a team, and including coach, owner, stadium, as well.
In THAT case, the answer is... it depends.

If you are Baltimore, it is Linebacker. They won the superbowl without any offense.
If you are Indianapolis, it is Quarterback.
If you are Denver, is is O-Line all the way.
If you are New England, it is Coach.
If you are San Diego, it is Tight End... :p

If you are New England, it's the Kicker. How many timeshas Vinateri saved their asses? :D

They were saying the other night. that he has won 4 of the last 6 playoff games for them. I would call that a important guy!

It was vaguely amusing the first time someone said "commissioner"....now you're just being unoriginal.

lol. you're right. it's lame, hence the edit.

i looked at the OP and immediately hit reply when i didn't see 'commissioner' as an option.

i'd definately say it has to start at the top. W/ the owner and GM with a determination to win and willing to do what it takes to do so. A prime example would be the 49ers. When Eddie DeBartelo owned the team, he wanted to win. He did what it took (def at a high cost), but it works...if you don't believe me, look at the yankees too...Granted, they don't win the World Series ALL THE TIME, but they definately have winning seasons consistantly...(and granted their standards are much higher than other teams now)...

As for those who say the coach, i agree only to a point....a coach can only do so much with what he has...hence why Zen Master Phil Jackson coached the Lakers...(he got lucky getting Jordan w/ the bulls)...Look at Tony Dungy...he's known for his defense...he brought TB to the championship (because we know it was the defense that made TB beat Oak in the superbowl, not Jon Gruden's offense). But again, Tony Dungy can only do so much w/ the players he has...hence why colts are ranked 19th in defense...

if we're talking about positions on the gridiron, i'd say it depends what year you're in....the position du jour is QB. Just ask Bill Parcells...

Jesus you people are still stupid enough to buy into ESPN and their hype of Manning, McNabb, Owens, Priest, Ray Lewis, Moss etc...
Every star player is made by his surrounding team giving him the opening to take high reward opportunities. The patriots on the other hand are actually a football team that plays to win games and does it under real conditions (ie... outside on a REAL field).
2 out of 3 superbowls backs it up. How many Superbowls have the 6 guys I mentioned above won? 0 How many has Kevin Faulk won? 2

i wouldn't say all the players you've mentioned are just hype...they're actually good players...granted they've a combined Superbowl of 1, I'd take any of them on my team (if i were an owner) anyday of the week. ...and w/ regards to the Patriots, while they do work effectively as a team, all the hype is on how calm Tom Brady is...and anyways,...it's easy to be a "team" and get the reputation when you're winning....let's just wait to see the downturn (as is inevitable now w/ salary cap eventually).

No one position. You can always say X isn't important w/o Y, that's the nature of a team sport. The o-line doesn't score, and can't win the game...

GM. The difference between a bad GM and a good GM is huge. When you got a bad GM thats picking all the wrong players, it doesn't matter which position is important, no one there is good enough to play. When your bad GM takes you to salary cap hell and can't get you out of it and when it seems he's made progress but then keeps going back, then you'll understand!!!
