id have to say Hydraulic Pumps. nothing would be accomplished now adays without them.

making a road, digging a basement, elevators (they do have the old chain ones though) and many many other things are reliant upon them.

I'm going to have to go with fire. Then again, I suppose that's a discovery rather than an invention. Otherwise, I'd say the wheel or other simple device to gain mechanical advantage.
