Most effective way to tone the abs?

Is the most effective workout in toning the abs simply doing cardio to burn cals and doing situps to tone? What other exercises specifically target the abs?

I've been using various exercises on a stability ball. Much more effective than just crunches IMHO since you have to balance as well as execute the move.

I'm no bodybuilder, but I think you have the right idea. cardio burns fat, and ab exercises build the muscle. For practice, our coach gave us a system of "gutbusters" and I am seeing a very noticeable difference. We do 50 crunches, put one foot up on the opposite leg, and do 25 to each side, then lay on each side and do 25 like that, then 50 bicycles, 50 leg lifts, and something coach calls "squiggly monsters" where you sit down on the ground, lift your feet off the ground, hug yourself and twist from side to side. I have also incorporated Chinese torture or whatever it's called, where you balance on your elbows and keep your body straight, and also something similar to those but sideways.

whatever you do, dont buy into the bullsh!t that some people feed about "spot toning"

you can not work out one spot on your body and expect it to get toned...you have to do total body to lose fat. it seems that you are aware of this, but i thought i would make it clear.

edit: i didnt make myself very clear. i meant you cant skip cardio and just do situps to tone your abs like some people think. after you lose the fat, THEN you can "spot tone"

I specifically created this thread for you, knowing how eager you are about working out...

Are some cardio exercises better for toning the abs than others? ie running versus biking, or eliptical versus running.

Most cardio exercises don't do jack for your abs. I know cycling certainly doesn't.

i'm no expert, but i'd say it has a lot to do with your current physical state.

if you have a lot of fat around your belly, you'd be better off doing lots of cardio to get rid of the fat.

if you are already skinny, you probably need to focus more on crunches and other ab exercises.

i heard gorilla sprints can do miracles.

one of my friends never did a situp in his life but he was on the track team and this dude bragged about his abs all the time.

they say running is the best way, and then the occassional situps can't hurt you.

Situps are bad for you. Period. Cruches are good. Situps, bad. Crunches, good. The reason? You stress you back when you do a situp. When you do a crunch, there's no stress on the spine. With a crunch, you're only contracting the upper abs to raise your shoulder blades a couple inches off the floor. Make sure you do it slowly and pause at the top.

There's three parts of the abs you need to work. Upper, lower and obliques. Crunches work the upper abs. Leg raises work the lower, and side bends or the equivalent work the obliques (your sides). Do a few sets for each part when you work your abs. A stress ball, as has been mentioned, is great. As long as you do it consistently, you'll grow some abs.

You also gotta keep up the cardio. You can have awesome abs, but you won't be able to see them if there's a layer of fat over your stomach 🙂

Hope that helps.

My trainer recently had me start doing an exercise that cause my abs to burn WAAYYYYY more than any crunches/situps/ab machines that I have done. You hang by your arms from a chinup bar and lift/fold your legs into your abdomen as high as you can. You lift and release in a slow controlled motion.

I did 4 sets of 15 the other day and thought I was going to die.

No, you need to do both in both cases. Just because you can't pinch an inch doesn't mean you don't need to do both cardio and specific ab exercises. Thin doesn't necessarily mean healthy and the "core" is something most people neglect that shouldn't be neglected.

I heard using the rowing machine is good for your abs. Unfortunately I heard that after I bought an elliptical.

while we're on the topic,

If I just want to lose fat Is there a difference if I run 6 miles in 1 hour vs 45 minutes. I know doing it in 45 minutes gets the heart rate higher, but I'm only concerned with calories used.

running in general also works your abs somewhat. by tthat i mean while doing your running, keep your abs tight by just trying to flex them while you run. it won't necessarily make your abs bigger, but it will help tighten them in general. when i was running alot to get cut i always did this, and in the end of it i noticed my abs were pretty damn cut. right now im currently eating anything I want as I'm trying to bulk up, but once february comes I am going to try and lean up and just get ripped again.

The longer the better.

I say to do a nice long cardio workout and then right after do various crunchers (working all parts of the abs), leg lifts, and medicine ball sets. Start out with small sets of each and build but you have to be motivated b/c i'm starting to build a gut too haha.

You should try swimming if you can/prefer rather than running -- it's less strain on your joints, just as good if not better cardio workout, works out all parts of the body including abs. You wonder why all those swimmers have awesome abs 🙂.

Mazi just stick with ab workouts hahahaahahahaha.
