My wife was having a pamperd chef party sat night. I was in my computer room staying out of the way but i could hear what was being said. The lady who does pamperd chef is also a professional Nanny. she told this story that made me gag...

she had a kid that she was a nanny for and one day the kid started to really complain that his nose hurt. So the mom looked in his nose and saw something in it. She got a pair of tweezers and pulled out a white fuzzy thing about 6 inches long it looked like a piece of string. However when she pulled it out the kid started bleeding really bad, so bad that she called a ambulance. the ambulance crew couldnt get him to stop bleeding so they rushed him to the ER. The ER did some head X-Rays and they couldnt believe what they saw...

They dont know how long it took but what happend was that the kid had shoved a bean up his nose and it had sprouted!!!! :disgust: His sinus was packed with the roots of the bean :disgust: :disgust: They had to do major sugery to open up his skull and get all the roots out :disgust: :disgust: :disgust:

hope nobody was eating while reading that....

as far as i know its no myth, she was there. I can see how it is possiable. a bean only needs warmpth and moisture to germinate and our blood has most of the nutrients a plant needs to grow. The thing the mom pulled out of his nose was the stalk searching for sunlight.

Sounsd plausible to me! Plants sprouting in live human beings is freaking disturbing. I wonder if it was getting any nutrients...
Why do kids stick crap up their noses? This is even worse than Homer and his crayon.

Plant stalks do not grow towards sunlight (I'm talking about youg plants that are still entirely underground). They grow away from gravity. If you germinate a plant in a dark place, it does not automatically figure out the shortest route to sunlight. It jsut grows straight up. After it penetrates the surface of the soil and starts growing leaves, it will tilt towards the sun.

humm you could be right, I really dont know if the story is 100% true but she is very trustworthy and a good person. I just cant imagine her lying to 10 other women about it. Plus i know for a fact she does not own a computer so she wouldnt have gotten an email about it.

No, it's just like NotFred said, plants grow away from gravity. I did an experiment like this in high school using pinto beans. I stuck the beans in a pot, watered them, and hid the pot in a locked cupboard, only taking it out to water it every few days. I figured it wouldn't grow at all and it'd be an easy grade for my class.

I came back to class after the weekend to find it had actually sprouted and was like 8 inches high. Incredibly pail, but it was tall, just from the nutrients in the soil and the water I'd given it. Obviously, the plant didn't live long since it wasn't getting any sun after its leaves had opened, but I learned a lesson from that. :D

are you sure?

Plants dont need sunlight to germinate. i bet if it was left to grow the plant would have received enough sunlight through the nose to continue growing.

The seed is actually mostly carbs, very little is the genetic material that makes the plant. Upon awakening and starting to grow, it uses the seed for nutrients and energy, before it has leaves (photosynthesis) it has enough juice to get up and at em.

I still don't believe the story though. If something is stuck in your nose, like a bean, it's really aggrivating and you'd want it out, there are no hidden recesses in there that it could "get lost" in. It would be bugging you to hell well before it sprouted.

Most plant seeds have huge amounts of fatty and protien deposits in them. The only thing the seed needs to be activated is water. Once it is, it can grow for a while based on the deposits but ultimately they will run out and the plant will have to start photosynthesis. It is possible for a seed to grow and also possible for the stalk to come out of the nose(ewwwww..) After all that was possibly the only path for it to take.

Let's do an experiment. Take a drinking straw, and cap one end. Now wrap the whole thing in leather, so that it's nicely covered and only has one open end. Take the open end, and point it at the ground. Now, stand underneath it and see how bright it is 2 inches up inside the straw. There's not many plants that can live with that little light. Also, the root system on a 2 inch bean plant is hardly big enough to permeate a kid's head. I doubt it's strong enough to grow into live tissue. Go find a two inch sprout and pull it out of the ground, I don't think there will be any more root there than there is snot in a typical kid's nose.

Here is a similar, but more disgusting story (I mean it, this is not pleasant - discretion is advised). Notice the status is "undetermined."

This would only apply if this kid kept his nostrils closed. But small amounts of light do get into the sinues via the nostrils. I believe this. I've ready other instances, one where a lady had gotten a tiny cut, and was riding through a field of flowers where lots of pollen was floating everywhere. Months later, she had this tumor on her arm where the cut was, and a plant was trying to grow (it was a small seed that healed under her skin).

The bean would have pulled all of the necessary moisture from the sinues, but the nutrients would have come from the bean itself, not blood. But I suppose roots could penetrate the tissue after some time...

brings whole new meaning to "bean brain"

Under ideal circumstances, I think a bean sprouting in the nasal passage is entirely feasible. However, the discomfort and nasal discharge that would come as a result of such a growth would be hard to ignore for a long enough time period for the bean to be able to grow as much as was related in Citrix's second-hand story.
