Once upon a time I was walking around a hospital with my little IV bag on wheels. The bag ran out of liquid water, and blood started to pump up the line and into the bag. I had to lower my arm to stop it.

Doctors went crazy with me because I moved too much with the damn IV in me so it either broke every other hour, or my blood would pump into the IV and clot so they had to replace the entire line.
Also, one time, I woke up with my bed and I soaked in IV fluid because I had ripped open the line while sleeping and it had been dripping out for hours..
I hate IV's. So damn annoying.
I wish schools showed you how to hook these up and I wish they were sold in drug stores. It's amazing what pumping water through a person can do.
That would also be the ultimate hangover cure. Put your drunk guy in the tub so he can piss without having to get up. Give him an IV at full blast.
Um... I had a problem once where they switched off the IV for a few minutes to change something. When they turned it back on, it was already clotted up and started to swell.
Freaked me out!
The stopped and pulled it out. It had adhered to the lining of my vein, so when they pulled it out, it kind of krinkled up the vein above the instertion point like a garden hose or a shoelace. It felt REALLY "ookey".
I still do not have any circulation in that vein and this was back in '95...
Just thought I would share!
The ships in Star Trek travel by bending space and going through worm holes. Engine failure means you can no longer bend space. The ship basically can't travel anymore.

Only warp engines. At least their regular impulse engines should work.
Oh yeah so my wife and I were watching an episode of Voyager last night. Some energy wave hits them, immediately their engines go down. After it passes, they give a damage report:
"Shields are holding. Minor hull damage to deck 10. No injuries."
Yet their engines failed.
Oh Star Trek.
Using impulse power is like manually rowing a boat when you're in the middle of the ocean. You might as well not even try. The distance between galaxies is measured in light years and using impulse limits you to going less than light speed, so it would take literally years to travel anywhere.
Maybe the warp engine is generating a weird gravity field but the shields rely on an electric field. Maybe they got hit by something that is more strongly affected by gravity waves than it is by electromagnetic waves.
Take a real world example. Let's say I have a rubber/plastic space ship and in the middle of the plastic space ship is a very large inductor connected to a huge source of AC power. If our little space ship is traveling at a low speed through a bunch of ground up iron (like pushing your hand through sand), the iron will not damage the ship's hull because there's no field reaction between them. The inductor inside the ship would be going ape shit because the iron around the ship would be acting like a shorted secondary on a transformer. The outer ship is fine but the inductor inside the ship is melting!
terrible stories, just terrible plots and dialogues. also, poor balance and pathetic climax/endings.

I know all that, I'm just talking about avoiding a thing in space that is flying at them. Unless it's coming at them at the speed of light or faster, they ought to be able to just fly out of the way with impulse engines. I'm not referring at all to traveling from one star to another (and btw in Star Trek they don't have the technology to get from one galaxy to another, it's just too distant).
Oh and the other thing sci-fi does is it treats space like a plane rather than a three-dimensional field. Ships always fly "upright" and come at each other in the same plane. No one ever goes "above" or "below" other ships, nor do they ever point "up" or "down" in relation to others. Well, it does happen rarely, but most of the time they act like they're in atmosphere.

I give them a pass on the space noise one because 1) Explosion noises are cool 2) The camera itself isn't really defined as being in the world exactly. 3) As mentioned, far worse sound offenses are routinely performed and even expected with knives and punches.
Also the parking thing I give a pass on because while realistic, that is boring. You just have to let that stuff go for brevity. I suppose you could cut to the scene starting with them saying they had to park in the garage and have them be out of breath, but that would still be a waste of film time really.

A lot of the time they don't actually show you where the person parked in relation to the building.
I'll use pulp fiction as the example. They're driving, talking, and marvin is shot in the face. Next it shows them inside jimmy's house. The whole thing of parking and walking to the door are skipped.

The Maxtor Slim drives used in live free or die hard.
1) Those drives haven't been in production since early 2000s (over 5 years since the movie released)
2) They are running without a lid/modified clear lid. You don't put valuable data you are trying to steal (or don't want lost/stolen) on a modified hard drive. Especially if you are a "Elite haxxor"
3) The hard drives clearly have media damage...that is supposed to make it "look cool" in the movie, but really just looks really obviously bad.

Police packing up a body 5 minutes after its discovered. Walking all over the crime scene. Using items at the crime scene (phone, mirror, ashtray, pitcher of water). Interviewing the witness 3 feet from the body.
Oh and rich people in the 80's and regular people in the 90's not having caller ID. And cops unable to trace a call.

That made me think of those Snickers ads where someone takes a bite from a candy bar and immediately says their hunger is gone, even before they've chewed or swallowed.
But I know that was intentionally done because it's just a silly 30 second ad.
It's been mentioned a bunch in this thread, but people flying backwards when they get shot. Seriously. If a bullet had enough momentum to actually send you flying, the gun that shot it would send the shooter flying backwards as well. Or it would break their hand.

Future tech is impossible to predict or say one way or the other with any reasonable certainty for most things. We can notice things that seem absurd, like how the amazing technology of seat belts seems forgotten in ships which toss everyone out of their seats every 15 minutes But as far as faster than light travel, cloaking, etc :
In 1911, if you told the leading physicists on EARTH that you had a device small enough to fit in a pocket that could take photographs, high definition video, and hold tens of thousands of books, or that you could store literally millions of books on something the size of a child's shoe, would they have said you were utterly insane? Also consider that the leap in tech from 1811 to 1911 was pretty pathetic compared to 1911 to 2011. Who can really say what will be possible in 2111 or 2211, assuming we don't divide ourselves by zero in the meantime
