Most bang for your buck AGP video card ~$100?

I've decided to not spend 200 on an agp video card for my aging computer. I'm waiting for a good deal to buy a new computer w/ pci express. In the mean time, I need something to replace my 9800pro which stopped working. I'm currently using a geforce4 mx420, obviously not good enough to play some fps games even at low resolutions. I would like to spend ~$100. I found tigerdirect has a diablotek radeon x700 for $95. Looks like it may be adequate for fps at lower res. Any suggestions for alternatives that would provide decent gameplay to quench my gaming need for the next few months until I get a new computer? Thanks.

You might be able to find a used 6600GT for that price. It won't be a whole lot faster than your 9800 Pro, but it should still provide decent performance for non-bleeding-edge gaming/settings 😛

Thanks for the reply. I actually was trying to find the 6600gt but I the majority that I found in my price range were PCI-E. Also, is 128mb ram going to be insufficient?

i picked up a BFG 6800oc off the for sale/trade forums, lifetime warranty so i was happy with it, and a very nice upgrade for me.

Lifetime warranty still applies if you aren't the original owner? I was thinking about getting a evga 6600gt so i can get an upgrade by paying the difference only. I think they also have lifetime warranty.

Keep your eyes open for some X800XTs for about $100 or so. I've seen them occasionally for that low CDN, so you should definitely see them around for that in USD.

Get the X800 series if you can find it otherwise X1600 pro. Minor improvement over the 6600gt with more features. 6800gt wouldn't be to bad if you could find it either.

I'd say best bet would be either a 6600GT or X1600Pro. X800/Geforce 6800 series card for AGP are not really near $100 unless you can find one in the FS/FT forum.

Ah, i didn't notice that. But just keep your eyes peeled, there's been a few similar deals in the Hot Deals forum lately.

What about this:

apollo 6800

Don't know how much performace boost there is between 6600gt and 6800 but the 6800 is an open box and in the price range.

I saw 6800xt's going for under 100 on newegg, those are a little better then the 6600gt's. Also try finding 6800nu unlocked cards on the FS/FT forum, I've seen them going for 100-110 shipped.

Actually the 6600GT generlaly performs a little better than the 6800XT. The 6800XT has 256-bit mem interface so higher mem bandwidth but that's about it. Its fill rate is only 2.5 GP/s compared to the 4 GP/s of the 6600GT.

Personally, I had a 6600GT and loved it compared to the 9800 pro I used to game on. the 128 MB's wasn't holding it back for the most part. What kind of fps's are you wanting to play for the most part though and with what settings? Sorry I don't know much about how it compares to others, but on my NF3 Lanparty, it rocked when playing BF2, which was the only game I was interested in at the time.

For $100, the 6600GT is your best bet.
You can either find them at the For Sale forum or keep looking at Newegg for refurbished 6600GT.

Something better than the 6600GT is the Ati X800GTO.
I bought a Sapphire x800GTO refurbished for $122 shipped and it worked great.
It might be available again since I returned it 🙂
BTW, the X800GTO might require a better power supply as oppose to the 6600GT

I'm like you, I trying to get some last milage out of my 9800pro before I go PCI-express.

But 6600GT is the best way to go.

The only 6800XT better than a 6600GT is the XFX 6800XT because it uses DDR3 and its overclocked but it only comes in PCI-express.
There are 6800XT in AGP but they are clocked very low..300/700

Games I play(ed): Doom 3, Quake 4, Swat 4, Fear. Hoping to play soon: hitman blood money.

As plenty of others said, I'd go with an X1600 Pro (or a 6600GT, really doesnt matter).

Your best bet is a used 6600gt or 6800, they offer similar performance.

The apollo card you linked is a gimped version which has only 8 pipes so its not a good buy.

Make sure your 6600gt uses ddr3, and if you go with a 6800 it has a 256-bit interface and 12 pipes.

The x1600pro is slower than the 6600gt in most games. Its had only a pitiful 4 texturing pipelines which is a significant handicap.

In light of this, the 6800 looks like it could do you better than the 6600GT. FEAR is a very shader intensive game and the more pipes you are going to have the better. The 6600GT only has 8 whereas the 6800 has 12 and twice the memory if your card gets thirsty. I'm sorry I haven't checked with prices yet, but I imagine that they are both pretty close.

Seems too good to be true but:

xfx 6600gt

It says new and agp but the bidding is quite low. Makes me suspicious.

I also found several places w/ MSI 6600gt for between 110-120. Unfortunately every single one was out of stock 🙁 I'll also keep an eye out for 6600gt or 6800 on the fs/ft forum. Only need for it to last a few months so maybe getting a used 6800gto or up is worth it but I don't think I'd ever buy a used video card from ebay.

Thats a good card but don't worry, before it ends, the price will do way up.
