Most annoying form of advertisements..

Given the amount of controversey it's stirred, you would think that e-mail spam seems to be the most annoying form of advertising..but to me it's nothing more than click and delete.

Telemarketers on the other hand..have caused me to wake up from naps, stop what I'm doing, force me to rush to the phone, and physically waste many precious minutes of my time..and will forever be the king of annoyances.

Is there any competition really?

E-mail spam by far IMO. Why? Because as of right now there is no legal way to discontinue e-mail spam... there is no dedicated "do not e-mail list" for spammers, and most of them will just sign you up to MORE spam once you try to remove yourself from the list because your telling the spam company that you're reading your e-mail.

Edit: spelling

I'll vote for spam, because:

A. TV commercials are a perfect time to go to the bathroom/get a drink/etc.
B. I have Caller ID. Screw telemarketers.
C. My wife usually gets the mail and throws out the junk mail beforehand.
D. Pop-Up Stopper is your friend. 😀
E. Ads within movies don't really get my attention unless they're really blatant.

Spam just annoys the fvck out of me though, because it comes to both my personal work email and the technical support inbox so I have to sort that crap out of the legitimate stuff.

Tie between TV Commercials and pop-ups. Since pop-ups can be blocked, I voted TV.

Those new McDonalds Salad commercials SuX0r.

i'm not plauged that much by anything, telemarketers are fun sometimes.....tv ads are a chance to get up, and e-mail, meh, i don't get TOO much, but it is still annoying, i'll go ahead and vote for popups

ads are fine with me as long as they are honest and don't abuse statistics/prey on the idiots.

These marijuana ads lately on have got to be the worst abuse of statistics I have heard.

Don't you love those, especially at night. Driving along at night, and bang bright light blinds you from those things.

I hate regular billboards, especially ones that are more or less out in the country. Nice scenery, except for this huge bloody ad.

Tell me about it. Whatever happened to "truth in advertising"?

For me it is a toss up between Telemarketers and Email Spam. The other types are easy to fight/ignore and I don't "technically" pay for them like I do for my phone line/internet connnection.

I love the televison ads for medical drugs which have a huge long list of side effects at the end which are whispered by some Auction announcer while we see images of people playing in a field of flowers, and sometimes the effect the drug is supposed to cure is listed as a side effect. What the f@ck is up with that ?!

Yes, I demand a separate option for Flash-animation banner ads.

Not all commercials are bad. Some of them are pretty funny. C'mon, how many times have you watched that Nintendo ripoff of the "wazzup" commercial? Or the ad for that Canadian fish company where the guy actually goes out and beats up the bear to get the fresh salmon? Classic stuff.

Snail mail spam is mildly annoying but is alleviated by the fact that it can be useful sometimes, like if it's an AOL CD and I need a frisbee, or if it's something else and I run out of toilet paper. And I must say that ColumbiaHouse adverts make great joints.

Ads in movies aren't too bad since they're usually the best of the TV spots. And as much as some people complain about the stuff in front of the movies and the ads they claim they're paying for when they buy a movie ticket I don't care so much. I've barely made it in time to see a flick because of those ads, thank you very much.

Popus and page ads... I think they should be a separate category. (And a separate vote option) Page ads aren't so bad as long as they aren't giant images that take forever to download. I can live with advertisements around the page so long as they aren't 8 feet tall and flashing neon pink and green, and even that isn't utterly horrible. Popups on the other hand are evil, pure evil from the anus of Santa himself. (Wait a sec...) Not only will they interrupt what you're doing but they can actually crash your damn computer. Try leaving Kazaa (not Lite) on for about 4 hours without any popup blocking stuff, then see how well your computer fares. (Actually it probably will be okay, but it'll still be eating up resources)

E-mail spam is kinda like a cross between popup ads and page ads. It doesn't exactly leap out at you but it sure as hell clutters your mailbox. If you use a hotmail account or something it's not too bad since most of it you can delete without opening, but when you're downloading your e-mail and you have to receive 15 spam messages to get to the 1 message you actually care about that's annoying, at least for dial up users. On the plus side some of it is funny. (I AM NIGERAN BUSINESSMEN AND AM LOOKING FOR HELP IMPORTING SEVERAL MILLIONS US MONIES)

The worst, and I mean the absolute worst is Telemarketers. With e-mail and the internet you can argue that you don't really have to deal with any of this since e-mail and internet access is mostly a luxury (though more and more a requirement for some, but how many work pages have popups?) but it is damn near impossible to live without a telephone. It can be done, true, but it's a cosmic pain in the ass. You can't very well turn off your phone because you might need to receive a call, and unless you paid for Caller ID you can't screen the phone calls. (Not to mention that Caller ID doesn't work for calls from 75% of the country) It's intrusive, annoying and there's absolutely no way you can effectively stop it from getting to you. Until the Federal "do not call" list goes through that is.

Finally let me mention Flash banner ads briefly. It's not the file size or anything more than the fact that Macromedia specifically went out of their way to include an option to disable the "mute" and "stop" features of the plugin. Animated ads are no problem for me, but when I get an incredibly loud advertisement piping through my speakers about hot interracial lesbian goat/donkey love it infuriates me to no end. You can't adjust the volume or mute it, so the only way to stop it is to mute your whole system, thereby cutting off any other sound you were interested in hearing. Fortunately I found a Mozilla/Firebird/Phoenix plugin that creates a placeholder where flash images would normally be shown. The file won't be loaded until you click on the placeholder. Makes life much more bearable. Do a search for "DIE" (all caps) on the software forum and you'll find it.

So my rankings:
1. Telemarketers
2. Popups
3. Flash banners
4. E-mail

There's truth. Take the one about car crashes.

"Of the people tested, 50% tested positive for marijuana."

That's truthful. What they don't tell you however is that bloodwork is only done when there is a strong suspicion of marijuana being present in the person's system. I can't remember the exact figures but I believe the testing rate is lower than 20% (I can look it up sometime if I cared) so basically marijuana is present in less than 10% of all vehicle crashes.

This is what we call "slanting the results". If I did something like that at work I'd be fired and sued.

The statistic I was referring to was similar "Of the people involved in accidents that tested positive for drugs, 1 in 3 tested positive for marijuana, it's a bigger problem then we thought..."

1) It never says they were under the influence at the time of the accident and I am willing to bet most weren't
2) It never says they were at fault or could even avoid the accident, nor what type of accident it was.
3) I am also willing to be close to the other 2 in 3 were alcohol related (it is a drug too).
4) To me 1 in 3 on marijuana, as opposed to crack, cocaine, pcp, etc is much better to me.
5) sample size? Was it random?

No I am not a marijuana user, but I do believe it is not a 'problem' but rather an easy way to divert money for 'agencies' as well as for them to take possession of property.

what's the difference between commercials and TV-commericals? You have movies listed elsewhere-

I can't watch tv anymore. Too annoying for me to take. I hate "commercial breaks".

I should add that telemarketers certainly used to take the cake, but now that I'm using vonage, I don't think my phone number is listed in any directory, so I'm telemarketer free. 🙂

I hate thursdays.

That's when the master lock people like to perform home invasions in my neightborhood and give 30min presentations on the bullet-proof nature of the L-5000 Lock.

I can stand the home invasions, but a 30min presentation at dinnertime? C'mon.....
