I really wish this automatic anti mosquito laser prototype had become a real product.

I've read that lemon grass repels them, but I don't know how much of the plant you need to truly rid yourself of mosquitoes.

I remember seeing that the first time. I totally would love if it was a real thing too.

On the other hand, accidental exposure to the eyes would probably be seriously dangerous. At around 9-10pm when they come out at the strongest it would be like a laser light show out there.

I used to put pans of water out in the summertime and kept watch on them. When I saw wigglers I would dump them in a net and feed them to my fish (Blue Rams which are fond of live food). I figured if they could feed my blood to their larvae I could feed them to my fish.

I use these on my grass and it handles 80% of them:

Short term:
12803321

Long term:
49180000

Between the two, and planting citronella around my patio, I don't have too much of an issue.

Lots of above ground and belowground insects are beneficial. Those chemicals don't just kill the bad ones they also kill pollinators (like bees), lady bugs, praying mantis and other beneficial insects that control pest insects. Unless your goal is to sterilize your yard try some of the natural remedies. http://www.naturallivingideas.com/13-natural-ways-to-keep-mosquitoes-away/

The biggest thing to do as others have said is to eliminate standing water. They don't fly far, usually just a couple hundred feet so make sure your neighbors take care of their standing water as well. Its an ordnance in many cities.

What has worked for us is using the skeeter dunks and bits (made by Summit). Link here: http://www.summitchemical.com/mosquito/mosquito-dunks/

Organic and non-toxic. It kills the larva - best way to use them is get the first mosquitoes of the season killed before they take flight. I usually start throwing a few dunks out in March. After that, toss em out maybe twice more, along with some spot application of the skeeter bits. (Dunks = long lasting, bits are fast acting, short term.) There is a drainage ditch behind our property, plus a few others within a minute or two walk that I will chuck them into. Has worked well for a few years now.

edit: Amazon sells this stuff pretty cheap

The vitamin D and vitamin B1 theory is total bullshit! Don't buy into it! If you're outdoors sitting around, a Thermacell works great and you don't have to douse yourself with bug spray. I've used the Thermacell while sitting in a stand, deer hunting and it does a great job.

You do eventually gain malaria/west nile of you tough it out.

Corrected that for you :)
you can thank me later

As far as the OP goes, It seems like only the winter kills the mosquitoes. Once it gets below freezing for a night, there are no more mosquitoes unless it stays above freezing for a whole week or two for more larvae to hatch.
