Its such a great day outside. Cool weather, tree filtered sunlight, gentle rain a few days ago giving all the plants and grass a nice clean healthy look. Would be great to lay out and enjoy the fresh air.

But NO - you're out for 5 minutes and you've grown a second skin of mosquitoes quickly draining a liter of your hard earned blood. These little devils add insult to injury by constantly flying into your eyes, ears, and nose. GAH!!!!

I threw a Dunk into the easement at the corner of my property where there is a pit of water. I drained out my bird bath. I sprayed all the shrubs and grass around the house.

This is one species I would be glad to see go extinct.

I need to get the town to fix that pit and find something that kills these things off without a huge investment...

Try a flame thrower. My friend in Austria told me they work well... he didn't mention what he tested it on, though.

They can spot you a mile away with their infrared vision.

Eliminating breeding spots around your house will help, but ....

Mosquitoes take me back to my childhood, living in a tropical third world country. Mosquitoes were a daily occurrence, and we just got used to them.

I always wondered about these kinds of situations. Did you just always have welts all over your body from the mosquitoes?

I think everyone in my culdesac would love me if I did that. But, they're expensive and need frequent refills. :(

One or two mosquito bites a day. It wasn't that bad. I used to live in a middle class community in the 5th largest city in Colombia. Our neighborhood was located next to a large green area, filled with trees and a small river. Warm climate + water = countless insects.

It is obviously much worse in poor areas like the ones you see on "Sponsor a child" commercials....

meh, it's only head-earned blood if you killed for it.
Are you a vampire and must hunt to keep blood flowing? :p
Them mosquitoes... now they've got the right to say its hard earned blood. Most of them die trying to get that sweet precious red stuff. Poor little girls, they just want some juice!

Oh, and orb weaver spiders and flame throwers are your best defense! ;)
First line of D, them spiders snack on the ones caught in their webs. Second line of D... a nice string of fire. Now that's hard-earned blood! :p

Ah. When mosquito come out here, it takes about 5 minutes of being outside to get 30 bites.

Mosquitos at this time of year?

I have not camped in a long time but I recall how super annoying they are.

One thing that seems to work is pine tree branches in the camp fire. The smoke kills them by the thousands. When you get firewood, keep the branches for that exact purpose. (that and it's funner then putting gas in the fire, and costs less)

Sugar and water works great too. Put it in a bug spray bottle and offer everyone bug spray but don't put any on yourself. :D

Where are you?

I'm in a few different places.

Where I have problems with mosquitoes is in West Texas, where its usually dry. But when it rains, you can't go outside due to mosquitoes. Being flat dry land with no place for water to go, when it rains the water collects in playa lakes or small shallow puddles.

I hate mosquitos...do they honestly serve ANY purpose to any ecosystem? Are they essential in the slightest bit?

They're a food source for many other insects and amphibians. But not exclusively, so I don't think they're essential.

Gardening tip: Put detergent in soapy water in a dish and put it in a corner of your yard. Took out an army of flies in 2 days in my garden. Asshole neighbor. Also works for mosquito.

You can put pesticide on your lawn and poison any standing water. I've got a mosquito problem and just use a repellant/thermacell when I'm outside relaxing.

While it may be hard to believe, most life is not necessary for the ecosystem. Hell, the planet could get on much better without life. :p
Take out a few creatures, and a handful more might perish due to more competition for the remaining food sources for select creatures, but hardly any damage. All we'd be doing is speeding up the whole survival of the fittest part of life. ;)
Although, really, we just need to get rid of the females. They're the bitches, as usual. :D They bleed us. The men just go about their lives by drinking nectar and other liquids exclusively.

Oh, and I guess you could say the real purpose of the female mosquito is to be a vector of disease, and in doing so, the hand of nature for population control.
Except, us humans are a pesky nuisance to that whole population control system, what with our advanced medicine. Now look at us. Nature's gonna have to flood a bitch just to get us in check. :p
