Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is quite enjoyable.

It's great to play as the characters of Mortal Kombat in an actual 3D arcade game against hoards of bad guys moving through levels finding secrets, etc. :)

The two protagonists, Liu Kang and Kung Lao are both Shaolin Monks.

eh? is this a PC or arcade game? i'd love to see something similar to KOTOR using the MK characters. in place of force powers, they could gain additional finishing moves or special combos.

It's for the Xbox and PS2. And yes, it's a pretty cool game.

Exactly. You get XP for kills. Then you use that XP like currency to earn new new combos and specials.

Nik, you loser, tell me... Have you played MK Deception? Is the world walking around similar to that? If so, it really felt tacked on in MK:D and I may avoid it. I hope not though, because MK is a fun series, no matter what the haters say. Nik, you are not a hater... therefore, maybe I like you afterall. Just maybe.

hey now, that sounds like it's a worthy addition. Is it an arcade-perfect clone?

From reviews, Shaolin Monks is supposed to be nothing like the world mode in Deception. I think they saw the possibility available to them in deception but wanted to flesh it out more so made an action adventure game.

Thank God. Deception's World showed potential, but it was so lame after about 10 minutes it was tough getting through to unlock everyone.

Agreed, it's a little repetitive but the world is really fleshed out well. I can recognize backgrounds and scenes from the original Mortal Kombat II arcade game (I wasted soooo many quarters in high school on this game and Street Fighter II), it's pretty cool being able to walk through the full 3d environments of those stages.

MK: Shaolin Monks is a lot like a 3d version of the old school beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage or Final Fight. I love how you gain exp to upgrade your specials and your combos. You also gain other skills such as double jump and wall running as you progress through the story while beating up the bosses (usually characters from the MK games).

trapper: if you're correct and it's like Streets of Rage... I'm totally in. I loved those games.

Have you ever played Gauntlet Legends? That's the only game I can think of like this. It's 3D 3rd person hardcore MK action. My buddy and I were playing and tag teaming off of each other's enemies, etc. Liu Kang can throw fireballs at Kung Lau and Kung Lau splits the fireball and sends it in all directions. Kung Lau can pick up Liu Kang and swing him around doing massive damage to enemies. You build up energy to be able to perform fatalities. Mutalities allow you to perform fatalities on multiple enemies and there's one ther "alities" that allows you to one-shot fatality without the cut scene for an amount of time. Running around friggin carving destruction in your wake. :D

You can play single-player or co-op to play the story or you can just jump right into the ring in versus mode.

There's strength tests to get passed certain spots, secrets unlocking other characters and maps in versus mode along with concept art, unlocking powers, etc. It's great. I love it.
