RANTING!!: I am building a computer for a friend of mine (he wants to learn, so i am semi-teaching him). First, he orders everything. Then a person he knows comes over and decides to do it for him. (he thinks he knows computers, but all he has done is spraypaint his e-machines). He SMEARS artic silver all over the processor, killling it by shorting. Alright, friend learned his lesson, orderend a new computer. I went over htere today to put it together and the mobo is dead. Aparently the person also tried to hook up a PATA to SATA converter to the PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL and to one of the SATA sockets. Just my rant on how stupid people can be when they claim to know what they are doing. It cost my friend 180 bucks, but he learned.

</endrant>

$180 isn't bad for an education. :)

it is funny, because the kid who did it an I basically hate eachother. I confronted him asking him what he did, and that he should pay. He promptly walked away.

I can understand using too much AS if you're a noob, but what did he think connecting the SATA to the PATA sockets would accomplish?

You're wrong. I know from experience from when experimented with my old Radeon 32MB DDR.

I didn't know that Artic Silver was a conductive compound.

It's mildly capacitive.
Cleaning it off will usually restore the CPU to a working condition.

Um, only a capacitor can have a capacitance. You guys probably mean it's a weak dielectric.

The other day a co worker of mine called me up to run over to her husband's store because she couldn't get her USB card reader to work. I walked in and plugged it into the usb port and it worked fine. She says "Wow, how did you do that!?" I showed her where to plug it in and that windows sees it as a drive. She says "I was completely wrong I was trying to plug it in there" as she points to the serial port. :roll:

One day a course on IT will be mandatory in public education.

Until then these tales will entertain us :D

Shoulda brought along that toy all 2 year olds play with. The simple piece of wood with a circle, triangle, and square hole cut out and corresponding solid shapes. Put the round piece through the round hole.

If morons were not allowed to touch computers, then the internet would cease to be. Not enough people left to support it :D
