Fatal crash results after emergency brake pulled
Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A prank played in a moving car caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle in a fatal accident today on Jumonville Road in North Union Township.

Police said Emmett Cooke, 48, of Dunbar, a passenger in a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Robert Leroy Keefer, 31, of Dunbar, pulled on the emergency brake lever while on their way to their jobs at a road paving site at 5:53 a.m.

A third man in the car, Terry Kurosky, 49, of Uniontown, who worked with them at Golden Eagle Construction, was killed when the car went out of control, struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof. Mr. Kurosky, who was in the back seat, was ejected out the back window and suffered blunt force trauma to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fayette County Coroner's Office.

Mr. Cooke and Mr. Keefer escaped from the vehicle through the passenger side.

According to state police in Uniontown, Mr. Cooke said he and Mr. Kurosky had been friends for more than 20 years and that they often played jokes on one another, including occasionally pulling on the emergency brake while the other was driving.

Mr. Cooke was charged with involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned before District Judge Wendy Dennis and released on $50,000 bond.

when I was a kid I always wanted to pull the emergency brake on my uncles Z. He said if I did it that the car would flip.
Guess he was right (sort of)

So, I take it he wasn't wearing a seatbelt?

Not that it wasn't the moronic passengers fault.
