TAMPA - A 21-year-old Clearwater man was arrested at Tampa International Airport this weekend after security personnel found a box cutter in a hollowed-out book, authorities said.

If convicted, Baines faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine for a federal charge of attempting to board an airplane with a concealed dangerous weapon. He is currently serving a 30 day
sentence after pleading guilty Monday to a state misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

About 7:30 a.m. Sunday, airport security ran Benjamin Baines Jr.'s backpack through an X-ray machine and saw the image of a box cutter, according to a report from the Transportation Security Administration.

When searching the backpack, a security officer found a book titled "Fear Itself." The book was hollowed out, and the box cutter was inside.

After Baines was read his rights, he said his cousin had cut away the pages to make the hollow section in the book. Later, reports state, he said he had hollowed it out himself to hide money and marijuana from his roommates.

Baines told officers he was moving to Las Vegas and forgot the cutter was in the book.
Officers found books in the backpack titled "Muhammad in the Bible," "The Prophet's Prayer" and "The Noble Qur'an." He also had a copy of the Quran and the Bible.

Several sheets of paper in the backpack included rap lyrics that referred to police, narcotics, weapons and killing. Baines told officers he is a rapper who writes his own lyrics and that rap music writers need to "play the part," the report states.

Officers performed a background check and found no record of crimes or active warrants.
He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and booked into Orient Road Jail. At his first appearance in court Monday, Baines pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, according to an employee with the Hillsborough County clerk of court. He remained in Orient Road Jail today.

The U.S. Attorney's Office also filed a federal charge of attempting to board an aircraft with a concealed dangerous weapon. The federal charge against Baines was filed Sunday but was not announced until today, said Steve Cole, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa.

Cole said Baines will be arrested by U.S. marshals upon his release from jail on the state charge.

idiot, he deserves to go just for being so goddamned stupid.

to the crowd that will say "this guy is no terrorist...they aren't that stupid"...you might be right...lets not forget though (as one poster responded) that back when the WTC was bombed the first time the idiot went back to the rental place to try and get his deposit back for the rental truck used in the bombing, that's how they caught him.

Was this guy a terrorist acting on his own or as part of a group? dunno...but getting caught with a box cutter in a hollowed out book is not a good idea pre or post 9/11

Seems to be a pretty stupid excuse too. He forgot the box cutter was in the book? Why would anyone hide a box cutter in a book in the first place? They aren't illegal to possess unless you're trying to bring one on an airplane or a secure area like a jail or courthouse.

There's been some real weirdos in Tampa lately. Must be something in the water over there?

Ugh... Why does this moron have to be from the Tampa Bay Area? We Floridians are shown on Cops enough already.

This guy sounds like a real quality individual by the way.

I always carry my box cutter in a hollowed out book. I don't see what the big deal is.

Haha, man, talk about giving credence to the stereotype. I don't get why a devout extremist would carry around books like that anyways. Is it in case you get a sudden crisis of faith and need some reference material handy to reassure you?

Yeah, thats what the CBCL is for (Concealed Box Cutter License)

If this ever happens to you just make sure you reach into your jacket pocket really fast for your CBCL and shout "I HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU!" really loud so people around you know that you are about to explain why you are allowed to have a concealed box cutter

Pre-9/11 you didn't have to hide a box cutter, you could just carry it on the plane. I used to carry a knife with me whenever I flew.

Maybe it was intentional just so he could build himself up some credibility as an up and coming rapper so he could say he raps about being all gangster n' shit and going to jail. . . since you know. . .that's the kind of culture that segment of our society seems to idolize and all.

Uh, your profile says Virginia. Want to have a contest on jokes about our states? I'll start...

Q: What do you call a family tree in Virginia?

A: A telephone poll.

I thought that was you

Nope. I don't own a 'wife beater' and I don't parade outside in nothing but cut off jeans and a baseball cap.

No doubt it was research material for his upcoming new rap hit he's working on all about the clash of religions.

I'd like to know how big this box cutter is. These days one man and a box cutter are not going to take over an airplane.

I think some things small like nail clippers and such are going a little overboard but WTF did this guy need a box cutter on a plane for? And why hide it in a hollowed book? The idiot deserves what he gets.

Don't confuse the Floridians with the whole cardinal direction and state thing... or the different spellings that sound the same thing... :D

What exactly do you think would happen if he were to grab a baby or a small child and holds them hostage with the blade to their throat?

How much control do you think he would have?

I think he means the type of control were you could fly the plane into a building not the standard type of hijacking with hostages, ransom demands, and negotiations for their release.
