The official term for knocking on doors that I used as a missionary was "tracting". It's not the most effective way of finding people interested in the LDS church, but it does make for a few interesting life stories. Most of the time it wasn't the people we tracted into, but the things we'd see walking the streets, that ended up being really weird.
I never ran into anything incredibly rude, just people telling us they weren't interested or to go home. Sometimes we'd get yelled out, but it was no big deal. One funny quote I remember was a person declining our invitations by saying something like "I can't watch videos because I'm Buddhist".
There will always be more Elders out tracting than Sisters, because the LDS church encourages young men to go more than young women (like hpkeeper described above).
My congregation has a few sister missionaries serving in it though, and one of them is very pretty. Maybe she and her companion will end up knocking on your door?
