Saw an interesting story on Nightline yesterday about this potential disease, people complain that they have skin sores with mysterious fibers growing out of them. Most doctors believe that it's all in their head, aka 'delusional parasitosis'. Supposedly, someone took a sample of the fiber to an FBI crime lab and they were unable to identify it as any man-made fiber. Personally I'm not sure what to think. If it's a real disease, it seems strange that doctors would not be able to diagnose it. What do you guys think?

Do you know what the significance of this is "delusional parasitosis". Scientists are basically saying that people have convinced themselves to the point where there belief is so strong that they actually manifested in the physical world an affliction that has never occurred before and has no other explanation.

The power of beliefs is strong. This is like bending the spoon in the matrix.

Hit the photos section here. I'd say they're not imagining that...

How could it be delusional parasitosis if kids are experiencing? I'd imagine a child does not have the capability to do it at 3 years old?

I'm tempted to call bullshit, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that it's due to an unknown virus or something...

Not true. Do some reading on the condition - in delusional parasitosis, the sensations of itching/crawling are generally real, the delusion is that the person attributes the feelings to a parasite that doesn't exist.

in this case the delusion is so strong that the "fibers" have become very real.

We're talking about two different things here. One is that a child thinks something is on his skin so his body manifests that belief into something on his skin. The other is that a parents thinks something is on their child's skin so they see something on their child's skin. The difference is that the parent can be the only eye witness to this if it's all in the parent's head. If a child thinks something is on their skin and it is, there might be others that can account for it.

http://cbs4.com/health/morgell...tigation.2.631675.html

Some say they've suffered for decades, but the syndrome did not get a name until 2002, when "Morgellons" was chosen from a 1674 medical paper describing similar symptoms.

Northern California has one of the highest rates of people complaining of symptoms of Morgellons, reported CBS station KOVR-TV's Laura Cole.

CDC launched a study on this to "help determine if Morgellons is the same as delusional parasitosis or something new."

I'm not claiming that Morgellons is misdiagnosed delusional parasitosis. I'm just refuting what you said about DP. You never mentioned Morgellons in your original post.
