More Xbox Questions

Alrigth I got my Xbox from DP here on the forums. Now I need to figure out how I am gonna mod it and if with a chip, which one to get, but I am gonna need to research this further.

For now I am wondering if it is worth it to get the component cables for this thing. My TV has component inputs but is not high definition.

Yes because it is a gaming console, what I was saying is would you still pay 150.00 for it if it didn't play games, or more realisticlly say you only wanted to play like 2-3 games on it. Normally I would never buy a system for only 2-3 games. But since the Xbox offers everything else it can do, I am very tempted.

Let me make sure one thing for sure first. I have over 200 DVD's, would I be able to convert these to divx, and store them on my computer and use the Xbox to stream them to my TV? That is something it can do right?

I was thinking about the same thing a few months ago and I went ahead and got it, loving it! 🙂
You should also factor in the new HD, the cost to mod and stuff. Instead of getting a new xbox I went to craigslist and picked up an used, had it mod and it's been great.

DO IT! 🙂

My first question, say the Xbox was not a gaming console, say the only things it did is the stuff you can do with it when hacked, minus playing backed up games. If that were the case would you still buy one?
That's a tough one.. by itself, XBMC plays everything, just like a set-top media player... they sell retail wireless media players for $75. You'd be getting the XBOX for $150+mod costs... so it's probably a no to this question. But if you will be using it for games in addition, it's the ultimate machine.

To me, a very important part of my Xbox purchase was being able to hack it when its game release lifetime was over and use it to stream audio and video from my network to my home theatre. Instead of relegating it to the closet like a PS2 or GC, it'll be my el-cheapo HTPC for years to come.

Currently, the best thing about the Xbox IMO is Xbox Live. Halo 2 is a flawed game but the multiplayer is still fantastic. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory coop is wonderful. Project Gotham Racing 2's multiplayer is tops. If you go for modding right away, consider having it done carefully enough that you can still use Xbox Live.

Xbox sucks, no good games. Just buy a computer and do some "hacking" with that...its alot better than xbox.

xbox sucks period...not worth the cash

yup, XBMC allows you to stream files (vids, music, pics, etc.) over the network... this is the reason I modded my xbox.

Remember if you do the hacking you can't play games on Xbox Live.

Modding won't make it a full home theater PC since you can't record, can't play back all audio formats, and it's too slow for hires divx files.

Most people hack their Xbox so they can pirate games and just use things like "I could run linux" as an excuse.

xbox is worth $150 by itself before hacking...

The guy is right, plus add in LIVE and the games.

Sure the Xbox is worth 150.00 as it to someone thta likes all the games on it, and I am not saying I don't. But lets say for the sake of argument, I only ever plan to play 2-3 differant games on it, without its hackability I don't think it would be worth it.

DP, not a bad deal, I will definately think about it.

I know I will get the flames for this, but I doubt I will be using Live, I just can't see paying for online play. I have a PS2 and computer if I need to play online, so that shouldn't be an issue. Are the soft mods just as effective and then can you do the exact same stuff as you could if you used a mod chip?

If you get one, get a refurbished one or used one from someone. AFAIK the refurbished ones have the exact same warranty as a brand new one and cost between $100 and $120. You may be better off buying one from someone who will verify that it has a good DVD-ROM... if you get stuck with a Thompson drive you may have trouble with different media types if you intend to use any burned CD's or DVD's.

I play most of my games on the computer, but there are a few aspects about consoles that I like a lot. They're relatively inexpensive compared to a computer. Games just work... there's no driver problems or optimizations to get the best performance. Multi-player just seems more fun on a console when you have a couple buddies over... it's more difficult to huddle around a computer to play ESPN NHL 2k5 unless you have a video out to a larger screen.

As far as it's PVP capabilities, the only thing I wish it could do that it can't is record.

Also should I buy a new one, or is one of the used/refurbished ones okay? That is if for whatever reason i don't buy DP's

Most likely... there may be a period of 6 months or so where Xbox games that have been in development still get released, but I think by now, most of the new projects being started are for Xbox 2.

Dang beat me to the punch, thanks for the info.

2-3 peopel now have mentioned the lack of ability to record shows with the Xbox, I knew this, and for me it is not a problem as I already have 1 tivo and am considering adding another.

Maybe instead of getting a Tivo, get a TV tuner for your PC so you can record stuff on there and watch it on your Xbox. 🙂
