[this is not political] During the run-up to the 2016 election I was a bit glued to the TV set. A commentator came on, a supposed expert on it all, who said, "Donald Trump has literally driven a truck through American politics."

We all have seen that word's overuse. And it fits sometimes, but now we can't use it lest we sound foolish.

Truly is such a better word than literally.

Don't know what either word adds to the basic thought.
KISS:
Donald Trump has driven a truck through American politics.

Yes, in that sentence neither works, but try replacing literally with truly in this; I love you so much that I literally have tears sometimes when I think of your struggles.

Donald Trump has literally ruined American politics. And literally ruined professionalism in the White House.

I'm so sick of reading about your angst when it comes to things like this. I'm literally tired of you tying the Presidents name to every thread you make.

Much as I dislike it, there is precedent for this usage of literally. Hopefully it will die down again in a few years.
