Alright, on this system my new video card can't do anything. I tried playing Call of Duty at 1024x768 with High textures, bilinear mode. I can take about 15-20 steps and the screen will freeze, sometimes with the audio freezing as well. Then, after 2-3 times of doing that, the screen goes black and won't respond. I have the latest catalyst drivers installed, does anyone know how I can fix this? I'm just hoping its not the video card, as I can't afford a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

Go Start --> Run --> "dxdiag". Click the Display tab, and make sure all the DirectX features are "Enabled". You can run the tests, too, to see if they're choppy. Install Quake 3 to check for OpenGL vs DirectX performance. Or run 3DMark 200X. Disable any real-time antivirus scanners before running the game. Open the case when the system is powered on and make sure the fan on the video adapter is running. If there's a lot of dust build-up, get a can of static-free air and blow it out.

Make sure your system's chipset drivers are up-to-date (Download VIA's Hyperions). If the audio is freezing, too, then it may not be a video issue.

Thank you for trying, but it still doesn't work, DXDiag said there were no troubles. It is now officially a guarunteed video issue as it has now taken to sporadic color lines on the screen sometimes before it goes black. I updated the VIA drivers, disabled Norton and ran through all the BIOS configurations I could think of. Can anyone help?

Was your previous card also an ATI?

If not you may nVidia driver fragments in your sys. Use driver cleaner or driver detonator to clean 'em out.

If it was an ATI card in there, watch for "the overright newer files" warning. If you don't pay close attention there you end up with a mix 'o drivers that will cause probs.

Get your money back if you bought it new. A 9550 with 256megs of ram is a bad buy since that much ram is useless on that card.

What'd you pay for it?

You can try driver cleaner and a reinstall.
