Check this link out-seems all is not cut and dried when it comes to DX9 titles?

For my part I figure I still have to sell my 5900 and 9800 and go next-gen to play the upcoming games at the 1280x960 with AA/AF that I prefer🙂

gin: hehehe this release has proven me wrong but also proven me right.

I always say there is a single release that brings down the same generation of cards. It appears HL is that game hehehe. Best card for the game only kicks out 60 FPS at 1024X768 and I assume that is without AA\AF.

I was proven wrong because I really thought the PS 2.0 benchies that were floating around were just the result of demos and beta software. It appears the FX line is very very delicate when it comes to scheduling.

So now we wait and see. 95-98% of the peeps out there wont be able to play the game @ 1024X768 with all the goodies. The rest will have to wait till the next gen cards come out hehe.

This CAN'T be accurate! If nVidia's PS2.0 shader performance is half of ATIs, and Aquamark uses PS2.0 shaders, it would be impossible for nVidia to come that close.

I think I'm with those guys:
There has to be something up with ATI and Valve if a POS 9600 is beating a 5900Ultra. Maybe the AA wrapper thing?

I'll be very surprised if this doesn't play out differently than we all expect.

P.S. It would amuse me if a bunch a people bought POS 9600s based on this though. "It ownz at HL2! All my other games are pretty slow though...."

At last NVidia showing muscles. I just hope they aren't cheating, and I'm refering both to ATI and NVidia, which would be really sad.

Rollo:

Checkout Aceshardware.

They have an interesting article concerning JIT compilers and the FX arch. I have to admit I always assumed Nvidia had a compiler up and running but maybe this is what the Det50s will include. So atm it may not be total BS the FX series of cards runs PS 2.0 programs pretty bad on Det 40.xx drivers.

But what makes me wonder is why is Gabe Newell so defensive about not letting people benchmark using the Beta Det50s?!?!?!?!?!?
In this aquamark I dont know much about it but it appears the det 51.xx drivers cuts the performance lead of the 9800 Pro in PS 2.0 to basically nothing. I wonder if it could do the same for HL. And I wonder if Gabe Newell is afraid to be sued for libel on some of the things he is saying. I mean I understand saying this arch seems to run faster than the other but he appears to go out of his way to smear Nvidia.

That is bad business and a bad idea, especially coming from a company that hasnt produced a game in 5 years and really doesnt have much sway in the industry like a John Carmack does. I would ask where TF2 is but that is just rubbing it in 🙂

While it would be amusing for ANYONE to purchase a video card for how it performs on one game...

I don't think it's a valid statement to say that the 9600 is a POS that would run everything else "pretty slow". I'd say it'll do just fine for anything that's out there now, and will be for an extended period of time. Not everyone is a performance junkie. Hell, I'd be surprised if most users knew how to change the resolution and settings on their games, or even their desktop for that matter.

quote from the front page of Ars

As you can tell from looking at the list in the slide above, Newell was concerned particularly with some of the techniques NVIDIA has used in recent driver releases, although he didn't exempt other graphics hardware makers from his complaints. He said they had seen cases where fog was completely removed from a level in one of Valve's games, by the graphics driver software, in order to improve performance. I asked him to clarify which game, and he said it was Half-Life 2.

Apparently, this activity has gone on while the game is still in development . He also mentioned that he's seen drivers detect screen capture attempts and output higher quality data than what's actually shown in-game.

That's taking "optimization" a bit far. Every time I start to think maybe my next graphics card will be a fx5900 instead of a 9800, some new bit of scummy cheating comes to light.

My current geforce 3 is a great card, and the gf 4 ti4200 is still the best $100 card you can buy, but nvidia is trying so hard to cover up their design mistakes in the 5 series it's disgusting.

Well, obviously, NV has already ? ?optimized? ? their drivers for AquaMark --- whatever ? ?optimized? ? means to NV these days.

If NV needs to optimize for every game that uses DX9 technology to make the performance acceptable, then NV card owners are in trouble because that isn?t going to happen. NV will only optimize for the games that get publicized on the popular hardware sites.

So far, the only ones lying are Valve and their sugar daddies at ATI.

Tubby Gabe claims that Nvidia is "cheating" by removing fog. Nvidia says it's a bug that they know about. ATI Fanboys claim that Nvidia is lying about it being a bug, but if Nvidia were to be lying, wouldn't they be making like the Black Knight and saying, "The fog is there. You're imagining everything."?

The fact that the fanboys refuse to wait and see what the ACTUAL RESULTS of final Det50 drivers are show how insanely delusional they are in their uncritical worship of ATI. Every sign of competitiveness from Nvidia is instantly called a "cheat", a "lie" and "proof that Nvidia is desperate".

There was a time when people rightly hailed Nvidia for being more of a driver company than chip company because they would wring 30% jumps in speeds. Nowadays, though, the Cult of ATI attacks everything because to fail to destroy the heretics is to fail to protect their tiny manhoods which are wrapped up in their video cards.

Makes me wistful for the Zombie days.
