more TI 4200 problems

I bought a PNY TI 4200 this week and installed it in my machine. I've been looking to upgrade my video card, and with my old G4 MX440 card being RMA'd, I figured it would be a good time to see what else was out there.

The card does ok at regular desktop stuff, but whenever I try to load up a game (Counterstrike, UT, Rise of Nations, etc) my computer will just bog down (like taking 30 seconds for me to be able to break out of the game). I watched it more closely last night, and discovered that it's trying to play the game, albeit very slowly (maybe 1 frame every minute or so).

I started out with a 300W PS, but after reading the other threads on it, I went out and bought a 430W PS (making sure that it exceeded the recommended voltages/amps) in the hopes that that might clear up my problem. It hasn't.

I've also checked on the possibility that it's getting too hot, but I'm not sure how to check the temps on the board, and blowing a house fan into the case didn't make a difference either. I also removed the other PCI cards that were below it (I'm not using the onboard sound and NIC) to make sure that it wasn't conflicting with anything.

I'd love to roll my machine back to Directx 8 (another thread suggested that), but I can't find the option to rid myself of it (and I don't want to have to reinstall everything) and try to use 8.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Machine Specs:

AMD XP 2600+
512 MB Kingston Value RAM (PC2700)
ASUS A7V8X MB
160GB Maxtor HD
60 Maxtor HD
3 Case fans (1 running off the MB)
1 CD-RW drive
1 DVD rom drive
430 W Power Supply (the name escapes me at the moment)

I'm running Win XP Home (SP1), with Directx 9.

Ah, I knew I'd forgotten something in my description. I forgot to tell about the drivers.

The motherboard has the latest and greatest driver updates (even the BIOS). WinXP is as patched as can be at this moment, as well as the video card.

I can't remember what version it is, so I'll check it out when I get home (stuck at work right now).

Id say remove/uninstall any apps that came with your vid card, uninstall the vid ard drivers (if you installed newer versions) and then uninstall the vid card in device manager.
then reboot, and reload the newest drivers, 45.23 or 45.33...

Those apps do some funky things...

Ok, I tried to uninstall the drivers and all the junk that was installed on the CD, as well as the video card.

I rebooted and reinstalled everything (using the 45.23 drivers), but the problems persist.

I've decided to take the card to a friend who also has a TI 4200 card to see if it will work on his machine or not.

how long ago did you upgrade to DX9? Anyways, heres how you use system restore to rid yourself of DX9 (keep in mind, any system changes you have done from then til now will also be rolled back):

Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore

In there will be a calandar with different restore dates you can choose from and a brief description of what was installed on that date. Search for the DX9 update and then go one restore point before it.

Thx. I tried to do a system restore last night, but system restore keeps crashing. I'll try to slap in the HD that I took this image from a month ago (I used Maxblaster, which may be why I can't use system restore).

Is there another way to get rid of Directx 9?

you can try 3rd party software, but I have never had any luck with it. Just do a google search for DX9 uninstaller. I don't recommend it, but I have heard it has worked with some people.

BTW, system restore has to be done with a user that has admin rights.
