More than half a dozen armed robberies in the past 2 weeks

Update: Another armed robbery happened last night. So much for improved police presence.

So over the past couple of weeks, theres been an influx of crime in College Park, MD.

Nobody has gotten hurt, but it's pretty disturbing that there's been more than half a dozen armed robberies in the past 2 weeks. The biggest kicker, is one of them occurred about 500 feet away from Police Station (not campus police, but the actual College Park Police Station) in front of a fraternity house at 10:00PM. It's also 4 houses up from the one I currently live in. Another robbery occured in a parking lot behind a new apartment building (The View) and others have occured in the local neighborhood thats populated by college students (by Knox and Yale for whoever is familiar with the area).

Another event not even related to the robberies was someone fired shots outside of the bar Cornerstone, which is one of 3 main bars in the area. Again, luckily nobody was hurt. A week later, shots were fired again and this time a storefront window was broken but still nobody was hurt.

Is it going to take somebody getting shot and/or killed for the University and Local PD to actually do something? The police complain they're bored, but when something actually happens they continue to patrol the streets looking for parties and writing noise violations. They even took a new initiative where undercover police officers dressed in plain clothes will knock on random doors in the residence halls (thank God I no longer live there). When the kids open up the doors, the police officers look for open containers or signs of drinking, and then start writing citations and getting the RAs to write kids up.

It's a weak rant, but I just felt like venting. Kinda sucks when you actually don't feel safe leaving your house at night on weekends.

Oh, and yes there were more police out this weekend and there probably will be for a few weeks, but I can guarantee you we won't have an established police presence. They'll be around for a month or two, drop patrols, and it'll probably happen all over again.

Cliffs:
1. In two weeks, > 6 armed robberies.
2. Shots fired on two different occasions not related to robberies.
3. Police continute to crackdown on underage drinking, not robberies.
4. Police step up presence with county assistance. Police and university realizes criminals aren't dumb enough to rob when they're here.
5. Robberies will probably start again after help leaves/cops get lazy again.

Your cops are idiots. Write a letter to the editor of your campus newspaper. The school will have the hell embarrassed out of it if your letter gets published. Alums (donors) hate reading that kind of crap.

Newspaper has already covered it. They just wrote an article detailing how their was an increased presence on the main road, but there was minimal presence on campus and in the backroads. I guess having two cop cars sitting in a gas station is good enough in their (Uni/PD's) eyes.

We're anxiously waiting for a new e-mail to be delivered by the police department saying there was another robbery. Crime updates and all.

They're campus cops, not detectives. Pretty much the best they can do is increase patrols.

Oh I know. But driving up and down the main road when people are getting robbed in places that aren't easily accessible by cars or aren't patrolled isn't going to stop the crimes. Neither is sending undercover cops into dorms on campus to bust people for underage drinking.

Oh and get this. Our local Police use Segways. So they should be able to cover much more ground all around campus. But they don't.

Yep. Since University Police are actual Police officers, our tuition goes to help fund such items.

The University is now proposing that tuition be increased, or additional student fees be added on so the university can subsidize the cost of giving health insurance to the uninsured students.

Cops on Segways? ahahaha
In any college town cops are going to be going for busting parties. Nothing like giving out 50 underage drinking tickets. Must be a tough place if you have all those robberies going on.

It makes sense to me. You can cover a lot more ground on a Segway than on foot. A Segway can go 12.5 mph, the world record for running a mile is about a 15 mph pace.

It's a great way to get around for cops who work in areas where cars can't go. $3k Segway vs $30k cruiser = not so bad.

Edit: My bad, Segway is a bit more expensive than I thought. $4000-$5500 apparantly.

The terrain is all paved, but its actually pretty damn hilly around here. Bicycles wouldn't be practical.

I don't mind tuition going to the Segways, I just wish they would use the fvcking things instead of standing on street corners all night and going up and down the same few blocks. University of Maryland is a huge campus, the Segways should be awesome for covering ground, but they rarely even use them on campus.

You'd be surprised at how someone who is used to riding in hilly areas can move.

UMD resides in Prince George's County, notorious for both its high crime rate and woefully underfunded and understaffed police force.
