WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- More than 60 percent of all cancer deaths could be prevented if Americans stopped smoking, exercised more, ate healthier food and got recommended cancer screenings, the American Cancer Society reported on Thursday.
And yet most people continue to overeat and not exercise, which is why I so frequently make the statement that people are stupid. That's something interesting to me that from one species you can have people who are intelligent and able to effectively reduce their chances of sickness, cancer, etc. through conscious efforts on their part, and then you can also have individuals of that species who are incapable of doing anything to really better themselves, and total slaves to their wants and desires. I have to say it's nice being part of the first group  :p

Yes, except it's without a doubt that smoking increases cancer; it's a causal effect, not merely a correlation.

Completely agree. This is absolutely retarded.

One day we'll come up with CONCLUSIVE evidence that cell phones cause cancer. There's just something about 2.4 Ghz that close to your brain that makes it logical to me. But then again, I could have told you smoking was bad for your lungs LONGGG before it become the nationally accepted "belief". Its just so obvious.

"Smoking is bad for you" "DUHH, you thought inhaling smoke was going to be good for you?" Idiots.

So what are we going to do ONCE that happens, not if. Stop using cell phones?

I'm a smoker and I could care less if you think your better then me. Or have some other ignroant beliefs that make you believe you'll live longer then I will. The fact is, that lots of people in my family have smoked and none of them have died from cancer. The only case of cancer in my family was my grandma and breast cancer, which she recovered from.

Would you be suprised to know that the oldest women currently alive in the world, and who will break the record, and lived in Pakistan - was a HUGGE drinker, smoker, and even an Opium smoker her whole life. Why didn't she die from cancer? Now bare in mind I'm not making an argument that smoking won't kill you or cause cancer, only that there is absiolutely NO WAY to know. It has as much to do with your genetic make up then your life style.

I just laugh at the irony that befouls people, they'll spend their whole lives eating right, never having a ciggerette or a spliff, or no alcohol. And then they'll die in a car crash, or they'll end up going Postal from too much stress. Hey bud, you could have relieved that stress if you'd had a beer occasionally, or you could have avoided that car crash if you were at the bar or at home smokin' spliff. No seriously, its funny to me.

There's a difference between truly living, and staying alive.

So you live a dull life only to get knocked off by one of the other countless deaths formerly classified as "natural causes."

This is great. In come the apologists! I can't believe some of you will actually pretend that smoking is not a serious motivator of cancer. Hell, you want to look at correlations? Well then stop eating. Sure there is a correlation between not eating and starving to death, but it's the starving to death that makes people not eat, not the other way around. Afterall you can make a if peopel didnt do XX then YY wouldent happen as much arguement for anything

So if I start smoking I guess I'll be truly living! Wow, I think I'll start. While I'm at it I think I'll get up to 300 lbs and stop exercising. Afterall, it's purely coincidence if I keel over at 55, because u can make a if peopel didnt do XX then YY wouldent happen as much arguement for anything

Yes, I don't smoke or use a wheelchair to kart myself around. I do indeed live a dull life by being able to climb stairs without going out of breath. Poor skoorb.

Example: 100% of abortions of unwanted children could be prevented if people who did not want to have kids did not have sex.

Yes, except it's without a doubt that smoking increases cancer; it's a causal effect, not merely a correlation.

Here is another argument for you then. It reminds me of the "Would you date someone who smokes weed" thread and how someone replied back that they wouldn't. And how I saw in another thread that this person is a bartender, and hates smokers.

I find that truly Ironic. I suppose this same person loves to bowl too. Have you ever been to a bowling alley? I can't stand it and I'm a smoker, thats why I don't smoke in my house or my car. ONLY outside, and I can't stand bars. I guess people are unaware that second hand smoke floating around in the air actually has 10x the cancer causing carcinogen's in it then the smoker is getting first hand. So basically, this person hates smokers, and yet he/she is a bartender. And will have a better chance of getting cancer from it then smoker. LoL, thats just ironic to me I guess.

And you know what Skoorb, how do you invision yourself dieing? From old age, probably with Alzheimers? Because alzheimers can't really be "controlled" from eating right or anything else, you get it or you don't, its in your genetic makeup. So basically, you'll barely be able to walk, and you can't think, you don't know anyone around you, and if their your family. You'll die alone, afraid, weak and senile while sh1tt1ng youself.

To each his own I guess.

yeh, and even if you don't get cancer, carting around an oxygen tank wherever you go when you're 65 looks like it just plain sucks.

Again if that happens he'll probably be 85 instead of 65 when it happens to you. Eating right and exercising will keep him youthful longer than some grub who eats junk and doesn't exercise
