My record was 60 hours with no sleep (no naps either). It was back in college when I had 3 midterms and two large presentation during a 3 day period. Damn bastards in the registrar wouldn't let me postpone any of them. the rule was if you had more than two midterms/finals in one day, you were allowed to arrange an alternate time. They claimed that presentations didn't count. I somehow managed to get through it all even though the last 5 hours are still kinda fuzzy. My friend said I stared acting weird (more so than usual) toward the end. After that I slept for 24 straight hours.

Lots of stories here but shortest one:

I was driving RV van (semi Truck) back from one of the missile sites and was so tired that I saw a mailbox run across the road.

I read something that your body does alot to compensate for extreme sleep derpravation. I think the study focused on a group of subjects who didn't sleep for a long period of time and they studied brain acitivity. they found that different regions of the brain, normally dormant in most poeple, are suddently full of acitivity during sleep derpracvation. the body tries to compensate i guess.

Anyone have a link to info about that radio station guy who stayed up for x days straight? This was back in the 50's or 60's

In high school i was rediculously sleep deprived, so here in college I've been very careful with my schedueling.
I average 11 hours of sleep a night.
I can't tell you how great it is.

my record was 40-44 something like that with no naps. and the worst was that I had to drive home to goto bed, I keep seeing the cars that I was following were comming head on. when I got home I talked to my wife she said that I made no sense. I don't even remember going to bed but I woke up 16hrs later.

I had one stretch of 46 hours without sleep that surprisingly was not too difficult. I was mostly numb, and my memory of it is a little faded. I had plenty of sleep going into it, though, so it was tolerable.

My worst stretch was during my "hell semester". I stayed up until 3am Wed. morning working on a project, and then got up for an 8am class. I didn't sleep that night because I was working on a research paper. I made it to all of my classes the next day, and spent most of the evening studying for a Chemistry final on Friday. I finally took a nap from midnight until 3am, and then resumed studying. I stayed up until 1:30, until I took one shot of whiskey. I babbled incoherently for about 20 minutes, passed out on the couch, and woke up at 3pm Saturday afternoon.

Actually, when you sleep for hours and hours end, you run the risk of being even more tired. I think it's best to condition your body so that you can sleep less hours and still function normally.
