In modern society (read: in our rich, western countries) meat is no longer eaten just for food, but because of marketing.

We can get all of our necessary proteins via (genetical engineered) bacteria and soya beans. By doing so, we'll also keep thousands of people away from starvation.
For 1 kg of muscle-tissue, 10 kg of plants to feed the animal is needed. Not really cost-effective.

Elledan, well you're right we don't need to eat meat. However, marketing doesn't produce the desire to eat food that tastes good though. I'd rather have some nice italian food or good ol' american macaroni and cheese before a steak myself in any case.

I do

I've been living on 'veggie' food for over 7 years now and I must say that I'll rather continue eating like this than ever eat meat again. Contrary to meat, 'veggie' food doesn't need hours of preparation to make it taste good (no, it doesn't taste like butt ).

That's fine, and i can respect that. I wouldn't mind trying that myself. However, i'm willing to wager that despite your vegetarian status, you don't go around dousing people with pepper spray if you see them eating bacon, right?

We eat meat because it tastes good. We like eating food that tastes good. Killing something for food is one thing, killing it for entertainment/cruel purposes is another thing entirely (ie, the snake being microwaved thing).

People like eating what they're habituated to eat. My parents and some people I know who are vegetarians/vegans prefer non-meat foods after a while. I went vegetarian for a few months (couldn't keep it up for a few reasons) and after a while, meat and other foods with animal fat starts giving you indigestion.

No, not really. The proteins those bacteria produce can be used to create products that look and taste exactly like meat. You won't notice any difference, except after a few years, when you're healthier, because those products contain zero animal fat
