The best way to solve this would be to systematically kill every single illegal in the states.

"A fence will slow people down by a minute or two, but if you don't have the agents to stop them it does no good. We're not talking about some impenetrable barrier," T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, a union representing Border Patrol agents, said Wednesday.

What are they going to do? Put a 6ft chain link fence and disband border patrol?

That sounds about right for this administration. All symbolism no substance,.

If you want to learn to build a impregnatible fence fly to Saudi Arabia and look thiers or Israel and look at thiers.

Here is Saudi fence

I thought they asked the Border Patrol what they needed and they said a fence?

If nothing else a fence is a symbloic deterent. It says come here legally or don't come here at all. What we need to do is punish the people who hire illegals AND send every illegal we catch either to jail or back to Mexico City. I don't care how long it takes or who ends up in jail.

What I know for sure is that I live over 1000 miles from the US/Mexico border and we have an illegal problem here. If we don't start doing something it going to spiral totally out of control, if it's not already.

Just so you know, if it were up to me, I'd support throwing every illegal out AND stop the flow of them into the country. Period.
I do not however support Bush signing yet another order to waste money and accomplish little more than pandering to his wild-eyed Christian fundamentalist base.
In reality Bush needs those people to get through, to keep his other "friend's" businesses viable, hence it's a phony idea whose time should never have come.

The way I see it you have to start somewhere, if we wait around until we have a perfect plan then nothing will ever get done about illegal immigration.

I agree that if we build this fence and then sit back and act like the problem is solved, then we're just wasting our money, BUT if we look at the fence as a starting point and indicator that we Americans want and expect something to be done about this problem, then I wouldn't see it as a waste of money. I know for now, that's all we're going to get from the current crop of politicians, but the building of the fence will keep the problem in the political limelight.

So I say let's start building a fence now and then let's get the ball rolling to give our immigration laws some teeth and start enforcing those laws against both the employers and the illegals.

This fence is clearly just a ripoff of the "Friendship ditch" along the border proposed in the movie Speechless (1994). In any case it will be a completely futile waste of money with no benefit to anyone except whomever lands the contract to build it. For the same price we could put up a sign that says "keep out", and also build a 6+ Gigawatt wind farm along the border, and ask the construction and maintenance crews to phone it in if they see anybody suspicious trying to cross. That would be at least as effective, and a much better investment in the long term. The southeasternmost part of the border even has high enough wind speeds to profit (slightly) on the cost of the project. The fence on the other hand is only going to end up getting stolen and sold for scrap metal, while they continue to dig deep tunnels over the border.

Economically, the data is clear that illegal immigrants do not compete for jobs or depress wages for most american citizens. The only demographic which is negatively affected by illegal immigration is high school dropouts, as they are the only group that actually competes directly with illegal immigrants for jobs. The net economic impact of immigration is a positive influence on the GDP.

THis whole fence thing is just election time hot air.
The fence is not funded. And the small amount of funds set for the fence has an * next to the bill.
* these funds do not HAVE to go towards the fence construction.

So folks, in truth here, there will be no fence. Please dont get fooled by these fools again (for your own sake). Havent you grown tired of this kind of politics yet????

Yes, the Fence is just pandering, and I agree with your sig. Straight ticket this year. I usually vote for Maine's Republican Senators (Snowe is a moderate, something sorely lacking on the Republican side of the isle) but this year she can be damned, I'm voting straight Dem all the way. Which is kind of too bad, I like what I hear from the Independent governor candidate.
