another confusing article over at tom's hardware
Unless you go to great lengths, modern systems can only be overclocked if you increase the FSB clock. And will that ever pay off: simultaneously raising the processor, FSB and RAM clocks puts massive performance improvements within reach - as well as risks to system stability. In that light, the RAM from TwinMOS and Buffalo Technology offers the largest reserves encountered so far. We have purposely omitted overclocking benchmarks with top RAM clocks in this article because, while that may tap into a wealth of extra performance, it's less efficient because of the asynchronous memory mode.

it's less efficient because of the asynchronous memory mode.
wtf are they talking about?

Asynchronous memory means the RAM speed and FSB speed are different (ie: using a 4/5, 3/4 divider etc)

If RAM speed is 200MHz and processor is 133MHz x 15, it will be worse than if you have a system running 200MHz RAM and 200MHz x 10 processor speed.

Both systems are 2GHz, but in one the RAM and FSB speeds are the same, so it will run faster.

Running the RAM at a different speed on an AMD machine doesn't usually increase performance, basically.
I think on a P4 it can be benificial (or more benificial), because of the differences in the processor architecture.

Running Async is general incurrs a performance penalty, especially with AMD boards. Thats why you want to try and run the memory and FSB in sync mode.

sounds to me like he's criticizing his ignorance. :)
