**UPDATE 1/5**

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced pricing for the company's high-performance MAZDASPEED6 sedan. When the car goes on sale in summer 2005, it will be priced from $27,995 (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price). Equipped with a 270-horsepower turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine, MAZDASPEED6 is the most powerful and best-handling sedan ever sold by Mazda.

MAZDASPEED6 demonstrates the trademark balance of all MAZDASPEED vehicles -- the highest performance vehicles to wear the Mazda badge. To accommodate the power of the turbocharged engine, Mazda developed a new Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system. When electronic sensors detect a lack of grip, up to 50 percent of the power can be directed to the rear wheels. In addition, the MAZDASPEED6 comes equipped with a completely new six-speed manual transmission, perfectly fitting the car's character.

Optional on MAZDASPEED6 is a Grand Touring package, priced at $29,925, incorporating leather seating surfaces, eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats and mirrors, and keyless entry and start. Because of MAZDASPEED6's high level of standard equipment, stand-alone factory options are limited to pearl paint ($200), power tilt-and-slide moonroof ($700) and DVD-based navigation system ($2,000).

In addition to news on MAZDASPEED6 pricing, Mazda also showed for the first time the all-new MAZDA3 SP23 Special Edition and the rotary-powered RX-8 "SHINKA" Special Edition.

The MAZDA3 SP23 Special Edition stands apart from the compact segment with the addition of a leather interior, premium sound system, high-gloss finish 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing front windshield wipers and automatic on/off headlights. Offered only in Carbon Gray Mica and available on both the 4-Door sedan and 5-Door, the MAZDA3 SP23 Special Edition exhibits the perfect balance of performance-oriented luxury.

The RX-8 "SHINKA" Special Edition takes its name from the Japanese word meaning "evolution" or "transformation" and mixes RX-8's sports car flavor with a touch of luxury. Available with either a six-speed manual or four-speed Sport A/T automatic transmission, the RX-8 "SHINKA" Special Edition features an upgraded and uniquely tuned suspension with uprated shock absorbers and urethane-filled cross-member supports, increasing performance and ride comfort. In addition to "SHINKA's" unique Parchment-colored leather interior, Mazda added leather to the handbrake lever, upgraded trim on the doors and center console, and revised the finish on the 18-inch alloy wheels and the head- and tail-light bezels. To ensure "SHINKA" stays special, only 2,150 cars will be produced.

Also on display at the 2005 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show are the finalists in the Mazda "Zoom-Zoom To Win" photography contest. Held in conjunction with Conde Nast magazines, Mazda invited the general public to submit photographs in digital and film format that best describe what Zoom-Zoom means to them. From the more than 3,000 pictures submitted, 50 finalists have been chosen, and the ultimate winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in March.

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

More info (Dated 11/12):

http://www.triplezoom.com/news...lish/article_274.shtml

More details have surfaced about the North American version of the Mazda 6 MPS sport sedan that was announced at September?s Paris Auto Show. On this side of the ocean, the car will be known as the MazdaSpeed 6, and will be the third MazdaSpeed-badged car in this market, following the 2003 MazdaSpeed Protegé and this year?s MazdaSpeed Miata.

Following the precedent set by those cars, the MazdaSpeed 6 is powered by a turbocharged engine - in this case a version of the 2.3 liter MZR that powers the base Mazda6. While the North American 6 is built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant alongside the new Ford Mustang, the MazdaSpeed 6 will be built exclusively at Mazda?s Hofu assembly plant in Japan.

In North American trim, the hot 6 is expected to have 274 horsepower and a healthy 280 pound-feet of torque at a low 3000 RPM. This compares very favorably to Subaru?s 250 horsepower/250 pound-foot Legacy GT, which will most likely be the 6?s closest competitor from a pricing and performance standpoint. The only transmission offered will be a six-speed manual.

Offered only as a sedan (for structural rigidity reasons), the MazdaSpeed 6 comes well equipped with a limited slip rear differential, dynamic stability control with ABS, 18? aluminum wheels with high performance tires, both side and curtain airbags, a Bose audio system with in-dash CD changer, HID headlights, and keyless entry.

A Grand Touring package will also be available, adding heated leather seats, a power driver?s seat, heated mirrors, and an advanced keyless entry and start system. Standalone options include a moonroof and navigation system. Target price for the car is just under $29,000 USD, or $31,000 with the Grand Touring package.

The MazdaSpeed 6 will be offered in 6 colors, all unique from the standard 6. These include liquid platinum metallic, black mica, titanium grey metallic, whitewater pearl mica, velocity red mica, and black cherry mica. The interior will be trimmed in black cloth or leather, as well as a two-tone white and black leather combination.

If the Mazda6 comes to market at its anticipated price point, it will blow past European competition such as the Audi A4 and the BMW 325i in terms of performance and features for the money, and although it will likely be slightly more expensive than a Legacy GT, the 6 offers some features that simply aren?t available on the Subaru.

The MazdaSpeed 6 is expected to reach dealers in late spring or early summer of next year as a 2006 model.

The only apparent flaw exhibited by these initial specifications is the lack of choice in terms of body style. While the sedan is no doubt cool, we feel that a hatchback or wagon equipped with the MazdaSpeed goodies would be even cooler. But then again, it is encouraging that Mazda's reasoning behind offering the limited configuration is solely to maximize rigidity - proof that this is a serious performance car.

The mid-size turbo awd sedan market is about to get another player, and it looks like Mazda is aiming for the top position. Mazda fans, your time is near.

I don't really like those wheels but they are better than a lot of stock wheels.
I like simple thin spokes.

Funk that, I want to see a MazdaSpeed3 :D

While I'm sure the 3 will perform better...the 6 is more practical and I personally like the looks more.

Only a 4 cyl??

Yeah, really. Wonder why they didn't base it off a six cyl. Although AWD is pretty sweet. Unfortunately my last sedan was traded in for a truck and the wife wants a minivan. Sigh...no more cars for poor ol me. Not until I get to my midlife crisis that is.

The rotary engine is the weakest link in the RX-8, objectively speaking. Subjectively, the purists think it's the strongest link.
