More Shaving News

Corey Greenburg's blog has an update to his excellent wetshaving primer. He did a segment on wetshaving last year for Weekend Today and the companion piece is still on the MSNBC website. Corey's a technology writer for magazines and TV. He has kind of chip on his shoulder with some of the other wetshaving websites, so some of his blog entries should be taken with a grain of salt, but today's entry is a good one.

I used to do the whole wet shave, brush, etc. thing many years ago, and I don't remember it being as profound as he describes. I'm guessing at this point that I was doing it wrong; however, the way he romanticizes the use of the brush sounds more like an infomercial than fact.

A shaving brush also gently exfoliates, or removes the dead skin, from your face before shaving, which gets rid of anything coming between the blade and your whiskers. Finally, the brush lifts your whiskers and suspends them standing upright in the thick lather, which exposes the maximum whisker length to your blade as it skims along your face. Never mind that using a shaving brush feels really, really good on your face right after a nice hot shower -- it happens to be the very best way to prepare your face for the shave of your life.

The brush suspends my whiskers, and a little lather keeps them that way? Hmm...

I understand what you're saying, but I actually kind of agree with him on that point. Using a good badger hair shaving brush with a really good cream or soap can feel insanely great.

A few years back, I shaved with canned foam. I switched to gel and liked it more. I then discovered Pacific Shaving Oil. I since have transitioned to badger brush + english shaving cream and it's definitely the best so far. I'm also experimenting with a double-edged razor, and on any given day I either love it or hate it. But the brush and english shaving cream are great.

Do you still use PSO with the cream and brush, or did you dump it?

shave with 50 cent disposable razor

No shaving cream?!?

nope, no shaving cream.... just warm/hot water and my sh!tty ass razor

I usually shave in the shower, no shaving creams cuz they all irritate my skin too badly, i use a twin blade razor right now and soon to be a good old straight blade.

I use it or Nancy Boy pre-shave oil before shaving now. It makes a bit of difference. PSO has a better delivery mechanism because you can actually get one drop at a time out of it, unlike most oil where it just dumps a dollop out. And it's only $7.
