more service packs coming..

If one runs windows update from time to time (or even better, let it do so automatically) do you really need the SPs?

Doesn't windows update install the service packs for you. (I dimly remember something like that working for me...)

The express install is generally made available on WU after release. I read the question as, if you install all of the patches do I need sp's too....

ok.. the question should have been phrased something like "if one runs windows update every once in a while, would one still need to install the service pack?" (the answer, most likely, is no)

The answer is still yes. Although Windows Service Packs roll up the hotfixes that are listed on Windows Update, they also introduce a number of other fixes and patches that are only available by installing the Service Pack.

of course we need SP2, because that way evertime i redue a computer it makes my life that much easier to install all the updates, there are some other pre SP2 packs out there that some people have created as there own isos you can burn with much needed and useful items.... i cannot elab more on that topic
