Zero-tolerance is synonymous with zero-intelligence. Discarding all rational thought and not considering each case based on the set of facts present in that specific case is asinine. It's a way to further remove having to think from the system. But since when is thought such a bad thing? Our schools should focus on developing critical thinking skills, not stripping them from their own policies.

I kept a pocket knife in my backpack during most of high school. And now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I had a utility knife behind the back seat of my truck. I'm glad I didn't get 45 days suspension.

Of course to me, the kid was a boy scout so naturally he's a right winged Nazi who had that knife to stab some gay kid. Ma had him in Karate school, too, a sure sign of fundamentalist paranoia and persecution complex.

We are responsible for this because we are insane. This is what we have allowed ourselves to become. Can you imagine the Spartans worrying about a fucking fork at school. I'll bet these extreme policies are a consequence of the fear of lawsuits. In today's climate, ANY school that experiences a knife attack knows that the victim's family will sue, and the only possible defense will be a zero-tolerance policy that's rigorously enforced to the point of stupidity.

Given the current environment of fear, administrators know their jobs and careers are on the line if preventable violence occurs on school grounds. Can you blame them for implementing these policies?

Not saying it's right, but if YOU were a principle or a member of the school board, and your livelihood were at stake, what would YOU do?

My oldest son (15) was caught with a pocketknife in his backpack with about a week left to the school year last June. They also found a hand-written list on how to join his "Brotherhood Cult", which included all members must carry a knife with them at all times. I was pissed at first until I read some of the other requirements to join his "Cult". I laughed my ass off about if for a week. He was suspended for 3 days. I thought it was fair.

The NEA has very strong liberal ties and has been a strong advocate for zero tolerance policies in our schools. Maybe this is one 'liberal' issue you might want to examine a little closer. All things liberal are not necessarily good? How can that be! Hopefully common sense prevails at some point...it's ridiculous that rational people didn't think this through a little better...the operative word being 'rational'. And these people are 'educating' our children...nice.

When I was in high school it was common for kids to carry buck knives in a sheath on their belt. No one was ever stabbed AFAIK. Creeping nanny state for the loss. And it is not just liberal ninnies pushing for this, authoritarian righties are just as bad.
