More recent SSD sticky (I just installed my first one)

Hi all,

Do we have a more recent SSD sticky? I just installed Windows 10 on a Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB.

So far I have:
Turned Off Drive Optimization
Disabled Indexing
Disabled Hibernation
Disabled Restore Points
Installed the Samsung software and firmware is up to date

I have read I should not fill the drive up. No issue there as it is a 500 GB drive and I will likely only use about 200 GB of it for my OS and apps. I have also read that I should disable Superfetch though I need to read more to understand what this is and if it is really needed.

I have used this as a starting point, but question some of the tips and to be honest for each site I visit on this topic I get varying tips.

For one I would think that leaving the page file on the SSD would give the better performance that is expected out of an SSD to begin with. Is it really better to move the pagefile to a spindle drive or to set it to a constant size? If it matters I have 16 GB of memory. I sometimes play games AAA games, but mostly my system sits around 3 GB of used memory.

Any 2017 do's and dont's are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Maiyr

Honestly, most of that stuff is unneeded on Windows 10. That's why Samsung did away with all those options to change it in their Magician 5 utility.

I disabled hibernation (I just put my PC to sleep). I set my drives to be optimized monthly (TRIM). Windows handles the page file automatically. I have restore points enabled. After 8 months of use, I have a total of 2.1 TB written to the drive.

It seems I can turn the Drive Optimization On or Off globally (all drives). I do not see a method in which to schedule it unless you mean you are using the Task Scheduler to do so. I'll keep looking.

When I launch the Samsung software it tells me that TRIM is enabled. Does the Samsung software need to be running in order for this to be so? I currently do not have it set to run at startup.

Thanks,

Win 10 will handle TRIM.
The only reason to keep Samsung's software would be to check for firmware updates.
I find it needlessly bloated.

Just use CrystalDiskInfo (free) to keeps stats on the SSD, and you are good to go.

Pretty much this. However, Magician 5.0 is very streamlined, very little bloat. You basically can run a benchmark, turn on Rapid mode, check and update firmware. Magician version 4.* was full of bloat.

As far as the optimization goes, I schedule it to it monthly under the optimization tab in Windows. What this does can be read here (It won't be the end of the world if you don't want to use that feature in Windows):

A link within the above article will take you here for even more reading on what it does:

Wow, thanks for the article. So now I understand why the SSD sticky has not been updated. There is nothing to do except enjoy the fast speeds. :)

Thanks,

bleh, why didn't I just stop reading.....

here.... http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheRealAndCompleteStoryDoesWindowsDefragmentYourSSD.aspx

"Defrag will only run on your SSD if volsnap is turned on, and volsnap is turned on by System Restore as one needs the other. You could turn off System Restore if you want, but that turns off a pretty important safety net for Windows."

As a rule I disable System Restore (it is disabled now). Should I expect that TRIM will still run on the schedule set in the Optimize disks window? I now have it set to run weekly so I guess in a week I'll know.

I still miss master/slave jumpers. ;)

Apparently it is defrag that is dependent on SR. Retrim runs independently:

"While TRIM (retrim) is a separate concept from fragmentation, it is still handled by the Windows Storage Optimizer subsystem and the schedule is managed by the same UI from the User's perspective."
