going to get a little upgrade to my system (axp 1800+ 256mb DDR, 2*60 gb 7200rpm, gf2 mx400). Now I decided to upgrade in one of two ways, please help me decide:
1. get gf4 TI-4200 128mb.
2. get RADEON 9100 64mb and additional 256MB of system RAM.
note: option 2 is like $20 U.S.D cheaper.
I like playing the newest games (like splinter-cell, freelancer etc.) but I'm not a hardcore gamer, I also use my computer alot for non-games work (hence the dilema..). HELP ;)

I would go ram and the 9100. I know the 4200 is faster, but that only helps you in a few games. The 9100 will be a great improvement in ALL (or almost all) games, and the ram will help the system overall. In the few games that the 4200 would be good for, just lower your settings, as the 9100 will play almost any game at a "playable" frame rate.

There was a 64MB Geforce TI4200 going around in FS/FT for $85, maybe that will free up some room for a stick of ram.

Option 2 indeed. That way you'll have a DX9 capable card, and more memory for those other applications that you need to have running in tip top shape. It should be able to handle new games with that setup.

Sell your 256 and buy one 512, or better yet, two. Definitely get more ram no matter which video card you get though. Helps in games and out.

?? I cannot believe the responses here, are you guys retarded? The Ti4200 will beat the hell out of the 9100 in any game , the 9100 is NOT DX9 compliant and 128mb of video ram is rarely needed and certainly not needed by a lowish end system.

BentValve I didn't quite get you. I mean we all agree that the TI-4200 would practily whip the 9100 arse in all aspects. but the issue here is, what would be a better overall improvment for the system. I also didn't get the part you wrote about the video ram, did you see that I meant SYSTEM ram? I'm confused...

$20 difference between the GF4200 and the R9100 you say? Then get the 4200. It is almost impossible to find good 9100's anymore since memory speeds vary and the best memory is only 4ns these days where 3.6ns is really needed. With a 4200, you'll likely get a card capable of speeds similar to a TI4400 when you overclock. Peace.

the $20 difference is between the 9100 AND the 256mb of ram. The diff just between the cards is $70... does that change the math?

Yeah sorry , I missed that.

Well I have to say get a Ti4200 64mb card and 256mb of system ram. There are plenty of 64mb Ti4200s for under $100
in the FS/FT area and ram is cheap.

I have a Visiontek 9100 in my secondary system and its ok but nothing like a decent ti4200. I used to own a Ti4200 that did 300/600 very nicely , it was quite a nice gaming card.
