More Proof, AOLers are Stupid

When I first read this, I was irritated at the kid for being so unremorseful about his deeds. The more I thought about it, those people while not deserving to be ripped off, sure were stupid enough to deserve it. Of course the kid was stupid enough to get caught. That just shows you what happens when you use AOL.

Cops: Boy Stole Credit Info Online
Source: Associated Press
Publication date: 2002-04-01

A 16-year-old boy stole credit card information from 200 people over the Internet and used it to buy items worth more than $1,600, authorities said.

The boy, who was not identified, was charged with two felony counts of misappropriation of personal identification. He was placed in a juvenilefacility and ordered to avoid computers while his case is pending.

He told police he acquired an "underground program" capable of obtaining the e-mail addresses of people who visit America Online chat rooms, a juvenile delinquency petition said. The program would then send e-mails on AOL letterhead telling customers their billing information had been deleted.

Recipients would then be asked to provide their credit card information and would be directed to another site that would gather vital personal information, including passwords and Social Security numbers, the petition said.

The boy, who set up his computer to run the program while he was sleeping, allegedly used the information to buy $1,643 worth items including computer equipment and a $300 water pipe commonly used for smoking marijuana.

The petition does not detail how investigators became aware of the boy's scheme, but it does indicate records are being subpoenaed from AOL and Yahoo!, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports in Monday's editions.

According to the petition, the boy says his victims should thank him because he was teaching them a lesson. "People are really dumb," the boy told investigators, who seized his computer at his home.

I dunno, a lot of AOL using folks pay me to build/support their computers. That either makes them the dumbest people on the planet or the smartest depending on your POV 😀

Well, obviously these people are intelligent in their choice of tech support; as for their taste in internet service, well, that's another story. 😀

So these people that sent in their credit cards are people who have very little computer/internet knowledge. So what? That doesnt make them idiots. Your comment is retarded. If you hate AOL, that's fine. But why do you have to take it out by calling people idiots? Get a life.

Translation: I or a member of my immediate family have been suckered by this same ploy.

This does make them idiots as all they have to do is ready there agreement with AOL to find out that AOL never ask for billing details through email

<< AOLers are Stupid>>

I disagree. Many of them may be computer illiterate, but not stupid.
No, I'm not an AOLer.

But why do you have to take it out by calling people idiots?

I didn't call them idiots, I called them stupid. They were stupid to not read the obvious warnings and send their credit cards to an unsecure site. I used to have AOL back in the days of my P133 and when it was the only ISP in town. I got rid of it when better choices at cheaper prices came along. I also realized that AOL offered nothing in exchange for the price premium they were charging.

As far as the "get a life". You took the time to type that, what does that say about your situation?

Even stupid people can do smart things by accident. 😉

<<
WTF was that?

My eyes! My eyes!

I either just fell on the floor shaking, pissed my pants, and bit my tongue at the sight of that, or I had a seizure for no reason.
