I don't understand why this thing isn't working. It just keeps giving me error messages every time I try to write a CD (using Nero 5.0.3.1, BTW). I have a LOT of coasters here, guys...and I am incredibly angry. This thing used to work every time!!!! WTF have I done to deserve this!?!? Sorry, I digress. Here is a link to the error log that it gave me last time I tried to burn a CD: Log File

Please help me figure out what's wrong! I want to burn CD's again!

Shiz.

Many burner problems can be solved by driver or firmware(flashing the drive) updates. If you have done that, make sure that the burner is on a separate ide bus than the source.(i.e. put your main cdrom and hdd on the primary bus and the burner on the secondary, also make sure all master and slave settings are correct). If this doesnt work, i can try to step by step troubleshoot with you. LMK

Thank you gogeeta13

OK...my firmware was up-to-date already but I reinstalled the drivers just in case it may make a difference (fingers crossed). I'm going to try again right now. About my IDE chain...I have 2 hard drives on one chain and 2 cd-roms on the other chain (one of them being my CD-RW). Is this the way it should be? Thank you for answers!

OK...this is lame. I updated my firmware, drivers, and my Nero is now 5.0.3.8. Then I tried again...and it got through the simulation perfectly, with no errors (it usually doesn't get through simulation). But then it started the burnprocess and got 69% done with that before it gave me a "parameter list length error", "invalid writestate", "could not perform EndTrack." Another coaster...*sigh*

Here's a log file from this wonderful episode: Log File

Please help me if you can...

1)are you doing on-the-fly burns(directly from source cd to cd-r)?
2)have you made sure that the cd is not copy-protected in some way?,try to make a copy of a cd you KNOW will copy fine.
3)this is probably a stupid question, but is the cdrw set as slave and your main cdrom set as master. Also make sure that you have secondary ide enabled in your bios. This is just really basic, but at this point you never know.

The burns I'm doing are mostly audio CDs. I made wavs of the songs, and I am trying to burn them onto the CD so I can listen to it in my car. I don't know if the CD-R is master or slave...and I am about to make sure secondary IDE is enabled...

Still can't figure it out.

Definately make sure that the burner is slave and the main cdrom is set as master. Then once your sure it is like that burn a cd from one of your hardrives to the burner. DO NOT BURN A CD FROM YOUR OTHER CDROM DRIVE(this is to ensure you are not having buffer underrun problems). LMK

Well...it looks like my CD-R is the master on the secondary IDE. Does it really make a difference if I switch it to slave? And how do I do this?
Also...should I enable DMA on my drives? What is the prerequisite for enabling DMA...does my MoBo have to support it or something?
Thanks for answers,
Shiz.

1)make your second cdrom slave(consult the manuel that came w/it, but this usually means moving the 2 pin jumper from the MA setting to the SL setting(usually the middle 2 pins)
2)now try making a cd from your hardrive. Fir example, burn data to a cd

LMK what your system specs are and how the burn went, we can go from there

I just set my CD-Rewriter to slave, and my CD-Rom to master.
Just making sure though...Which CD player should I make master? I have a 12x CD-Rom and a 4x4x32x CD-Rewriter. Which one of those should be master and which should be slave?
Shiz.

PS: I am about to try another burn...wish me luck. I really really would like to be able to make audio CDs!!!!

Another late-nite update!

I just finished burning a NON-audio CD (data only) and it worked just fine! Now...I am gonna try to burn an audio CD, which I haven't had success in doing in a long time. Wish me luck, and if you have any extra help for me please add to my thread!
Thanks,
Shiz.

gogeeta13...thank you for all your help. I have been able to correctly burn a few CDs, and that is great for the time being. Over time I will do a few more burns and finish the testing to make sure everything is working up to par. You are a top-notch Anandtech'er, thanks again.
