The new Mag-X scoop has two photos and some information on the new Camry. Definitely a looker unlike the past. Here's the link. I think the rear looks like the Maxima rear.

Here are direct links to the photos:
rear
side

Also in the Mag-X Scoop is information on the Mitsubishi Airtrek, small suv under the Montero Sport among other items.

Woah, that's funky looking not sure if that's a good kinda funk or bad kinda funk.

Thanks for posting this though. I will probably be buying a new Toyota Camry (preferred) or Honda Accord (like the styling better) sometime in 2002 or 2003.

What do ya'll think of this new re-designed Camry?

The new Camry looks better than the current one. It looks a little more "Accord-ish", style wise.

Edit: Also, the rear looks like a Taurus.

This new Camry, compared to the Accord, if I were to pick on styling alone, I'd pick the Camry even though I'm a Honda fanatic. But then again, by the time you are ready to buy one, Honda should have a redesigned Accord out.

By the way, a random tidbit I just remembered, I don't think it deserves it's own thread, but to all the AMD fanatics out there, my friend recently got his cpu switched in his Audi A4, and the factory CPU was an AMD chip. SCORE!

I'm curious, why would you pick the Camry over the Accord?

Here's my logics for why I'd pick the Camry, if anyone (NFS4?) can dissect and whoop some sense into me or agree with me I'd appreciate it.

Camry good:
1) Toyota parts are more widely available and slightly cheaper to work on. On the flip side, I am buying a Toyota because of it's reliability so I'm hoping that it'll never need anything more than just regular maintenance.
2) More cushiony ride than the Accord, or so I have heard and read in car magazines.
3) Slightly better safety/crash rating than the Accord.
4) Reliability. I visited the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky and all I can say is WOW. They quality check every single frickin' part, combined with their perks and good paying jobs I guess they are more inclined to make a better car? Or am I smoking crack?

Camry bad:
1) Styling is bland.
2) V6 sucks compared to the Accord's VTECH V6.
3) Resale value sucks compared to Accord.

Accord good:
1) I like the styling.
2) Better VTECH V6 than the Camry.
3) Better resale value.

This is probably pointless since I won't be buying a car for another 1-2 years and A LOT can happen in that time frame. But buying a car will probably be the 2nd or 3rd most significant purchase I will ever make so I want to be absolutely sure which car is right for me.

I have a 95 Accord and my family members have 93 and 98 Camry's. The ride in both the Camry's is *definitely* much softer than my Accord.

Resale value definitely does not "suck" compared to an accord. Camry is #2 behind the accord, and it's a VERY close race. So close, there's really not any significant difference. --And a camry is a more plush, luxurious ride than an accord. Don't get me wrong. I have a camry right now, and I almost bought an accord a month or two ago. My next new car will probably be an accord, but I will miss the comfort of the camry.

Looks like Acura fired someone in their design department and they went to go work for Toyota!! Like hello, the rear end is a total ripoff of the CL-series, and the front looks like a blend of Solara and TL styling. It also looks much more aerodynamic from the side (nice wedge profile like Honda.) Oh well, nothing wrong with trying to imitate the best I guess!

Thanks everyone for their opinion in response to my post, any others?

I wonder if the "not so plush" ride of the Accord is better than having a plus Camry feel?

Ricky - Why would you buy an Accord next time instead of a Camry?

OMG I checked out the X-Mag link and was intrigued by that Sabre/Inspire. It's definately the Japanese version of the Acura TL and TL Type S (the Acura marque is only American.) But when I read between the lines a thought struck my head. The 2.5TL is gone, right? But its still being made in Japan! WHAT IF Honda introduced a Sabre/Inspire with the 2.5 liter engine in the US to go up against the Toyota Avalon. Would it not totally rock?!?!?! I really miss the 2.5TL, they were great cars. The 5-cylinder engine was really a blast!

unc,

Actually, the rear of it looks just like the solara to me.

Ross,

Next time I buy a new car, I'll probably buy an accord coupe. I will buy it because I LOVE the styling and quality of the EX coupe. The EX coupe is quite a bit different from the camry, whereas the LX 4-door is quite similar. I want to get the coupe because it's a 2-door, smaller car. - But it's still big enough on the inside to fit me comfortably, whereas most cars that are conceived of as 2-door coupes are not. I don't need 4 doors right now. Smaller with more extras is better to me right now than bigger. My wife drives a 2001 civic, so we have the 4-door "family car" covered. Since my car is only going to be for long trips and commutes, and there will hardly ever be anything needing to be halued around, and seldom more than 1 or 2 people in the car, I'm gonna go for the 2-door. If they made a 2-door camry that was a little sportier, I would consider it.

Ricky,

Your reasons now make sense. I would also choose the Accord Coupe in a heartbeat over the Solara.

But if you had to choose a four door automatic middle trim Camry or Accord today, which would you choose? Still the Camry?

That would be a tough one. Probably, it would come down to the price and a few other little features. I have 200,000 miles on my Camry, and it's still rock solid. I love toyotas. But recently, I got a honda, and I love that too. I honestly couldn't tell you which I would choose right now between the two cars if the trim/engine/features were comparable.

I do think, in the current generations, the Accord has the camry and solara beat in styling at all trim levels. I don't DISLIKE the look of the camry, but I think the accord is a little nicer. I certainly am not crazy about the pics of the 7th gen. camry.

As much as I like all the Camrys, present and past, Toyota still don't have a clue designing a good looking family sedan. Look like a copy-cat from other Japanese automakers. Better than GM by far, but that's not much of a compliment. May be that's Toyota's secret, make boring but high-quality family cars. I still think the VW Passat is the best looking family sedan.

Poca,

I think the Passat is an AMAZING-looking car. Not sure if I am ready for VW yet, though. Doesn't matter right now, since I probably won't be getting another new car until 2003 anyway. --Maybe even 2004. A lot can change between now and then.

I don't see what you people see in them camry's and accords. Weak grocery getters.
Next september the new Altima will come out with 240 HP V6 or 175 HP I4 to go head to head with Accord and Camry with both engines.
http://www.freshalloy.com/cars/nissan/altima/main.html
It will be larger then current Maxima (apparently the Maxima will go up to face the Avalon in a couple years) and will have all the goodies. Read the article.
Anyhow. 240 HP Nuff said.
If the current Maxima can smoke any Accord or Camry, just wait till this Altima is done with them :)

Well, I, for one, see a grocery-getter. WTF else do i need a car for, than to get groceries? Get to work? OK, so it's weak get-to-work car, and it's a grocery-getter. Not everyone gives a flying fvck about the power of a car. Especially those of us who ride motorcycles.

VERY FEW things in this world amuse me more than when some badboy thinks he's gonna race me, and gets all into it, and then I leave the light like I'm driving Miss Daisy. Sure, sure, you just beat me in a race in which you were the only competitor. But, judging by your insecurity, I just won the "my penis is probably much bigger than yours" and "I am more mature than you will be in 40 years" races. Re-enforces those adult feelings. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.....:)

OK, Design Dawg. Here is the deal.
I don't personally race my Maxima. I don't challenge people on streets. But sometimes i just like to floor it and feel the smooth power of the engine.
And if you can get all the things that the new Altima offers for same price range as Camry or Accord, wouldn't you rather have a more lively and fun to drive car?
Keep in mind that not everyone has a bike to drive when they are bored. Some of us also like our cars to be fun to drive as well.
As far as my insecurities, you have never met me, so stop pretending to know me from just my posts. You are entitled to your opinion about cars, but there is no need to play a shrink in these forums.

i'd just like it(whatever--i drive a 1999 civic lx) to have a regular-unleaded using V6 powerplant and a five speed.
the problem with toyota--from what my co-workers who buy and creports say, lies not with the styling so much as resting on their laurels and their badgering to include extended warranties during the sale. somebody who buys a toyota needs an extended warranty like a banana needs a second skin
