I know i am in a small minority, especially since i am against what many of the readers here do, but i am curious to the reaction of the reactions. I enjoy older game more than newer ones, and new trailers leave me cold, it is all "over the top", over saturated, blurry, dof-ed (depth of field) "cool looking" mess.
To give you examples, i won't touch even if it was given to me for free Assassins Creed all versions, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2 and 3, COD, Need for Speed games since Porche 2000, Dishonered, Skyrim Online, Diablo 3, Guild wars 2, WOW, Sim City 2013, Dead Space 3, all sports games, all new "RTS" games which are now a mocker of a simplistic "squad control", almost all console games if they would be ported to pc, i never owned a console and never will, and in general, almosat all games released in the last 2 years, and the ones released from now on. I am putting my money where my mouth is, i did not buy a single big budget game since skyrim, and i dont see myself purchasing anything except indie games from now on. There are some ok ones, like Deus Ex human revolution or Hitman Absolution, but i would stil prefer the previous ones, and for example would replay Deus Ex 1 and not play the 3rd one.
For example now i am playing Oblivion after i modded it the way i want, made by its great community, and also i created my own personal mods for my use. Why i am not playing Skyrim instead of Oblivion, even though i played oblivion more previously ? I know i am in an unique situation, but i spent hundreds of hours modding gamelay for oblivion, i single handedly edited every variable (scripts, skill effectiveness and added decay logarithmic effectiveness, as opposed to linear as in vanilla, perks, player and mob health, spawns, weapons, enchantments, spells, potions, weapon and armor and potion and spell progression compared to the player level, and everything that has to do with gameplay) for everything to be as balanced and challenging and interesting as possible. I made a mathematical formula which i worked at for days and placed it in the effectiveness of all items in the game, which i adjust for balance and challenge constantly, which makes me redo from time to time hundreds of items for small tweaks. Don't get the wrong idea, i am mostly done now and i am spending all my time playing and not editing, the "work" is finished.
Now i will go to the bloom, hdr, dof and blur and enb. That is the first thing i look for in the game trailers which i know i will not get even for free. I don't want any of that in my games, i want crystal clear natural tones. I tried and also created my own enbs for skyrim for example, and nothing satisfied me enough, i wasn't even able to do something good even myself, i just find the most pleasant natural looking tones. Now all i see in gameplay videos is a over saturated blurry mess. Don't take me wrong, i would obviously install FXAA filters to desaturate colors mainly, but i don't play for the reasons i will mention now.
Now all games are full of cinematics and effects and portray you as this "cool" character that kicks butt, with long "epic" cinematics. I don't want any of that, i want quality gameplay, and the only "consolized" game i know of in the last years that is like that is Dark souls 2. A good example is the PS3 game "god of war" Ascension, it is just bland gameplay surrounded in over the top "awesomness". I can write a lot here, but i don't want to upset the forum members since i am aware i mentioned how i dislike a game any reader here likes, and people here would think "you are wrong, this game you said it is crap, is actually so cool".
What is all this thing of "new content" ? If you give me a weapon and a shield and good combat mechanics and balance and strategy, and a single room, where i will fight monsters over and over again, i would pick that over 1000 hours of bland gameplay, where i see new environments and zones and quests constantly. I do not want new quests and monsters, i do not want new armors and weapons, i do not want new "interesting lands to explore" crap, just high quality game mechanics where i would have fun fighting the same monster in the same room 1000 times.
Don't think i am misinformed, i look at new releases constantly, and there is nothing that makes me interested, except some indie games, which unfortunately get more and more cartoony, but i am willing to overlook that, there is nothing there to give me a reaction of "want". I prefer to play what i have on my hard drive, like X3 Albion, another game where i modded the variables in the way i want, and i looked at every single ship and weapon in the game, and various scripts, with also all fine mods other people made and i am thankful for their effort.
And you would think that a person like me is bad for the gaming industry, on the contrary, I would buy any quality game immediately, and like i said, i am getting some indie games, Bad Piggies, Osmos, Amnesia, Sine Mora, Trine, Orcs must die 1 and 2, World of goo being good examples. I also play Path of Exile, which i think is better than all hack and slash games released in the last years because of its interesting gameplay and itemization, and being free to choose your build, and balance and challenging gameplay, and it is funny because i would have paid for the game, but since it is free, i bought some in game currency.
I just gave you as an example X3 Albion, and now i look at the new one, X4 Rebirth, and i am unsure if i will get it, i guess the series ended to me with x3 albion. Another one is unreal tournament 2004, i just played it, and i am not touching any UT games released after that. Another example is supcom commander, that is where i ended playing newer RTS games. But i am grateful for the games i have, and i am playing those for years, and so far i did not get bored. Another random example is the OpenTTD, open source transport tycoon deluxe, that is better than any economy transport simulation ever released. If anybody will make a game with at least the same interesting and complex gameplay and great 3d graphics, i will buy it instantly, but i don't see anything coming, so i will keep my money in my pocket.
The others can enjoy Dead space 3 and it's DLCs. This is set in stone, i will not support any company with those practices. DS 2 is a decent game, while suffering from big consolitis, and DS 3 seems to be close, but I will not buy anything that offers DLCs like that. I know you would say things like "they have to make the money somehow" but so far i did not buy any single DLC and i never will, and ignoring that, since this DLC craze came, i am uninterested in those games, so i wouldn't have bought those games anyway, even before i knew that they will have DLCS or not. The only exception is Skyrim, but like i said, i am not buying any dlcs, and i am unaware of other game i like and which happens to have dlcs.
