Thanks to the other thread, I have decided that for my situation, forming a LLC is the way to go.

Now, should I hire a company like Bizfilings to set everything up and file the appropriate paperwork or is this something that's easy enough for anyone to do? Including the state filing fees, they charge about $450 to handle everything.

Anyone have any experience with one of these companies who provide this sort of service?

Legalzoom is Robert Shapiro's startup, it's pretty reputable. Sure, he got OJ the knife weilding lunatic off, but if you can see past that I think they have reasonable rates..

I filed my own LLC, it's super easy. Cost me about $150.

i plan on using legalzoom as soon as my credit card comes (get the credit rating going)

i'm in california, but i plan to LLC in deleware, due to no franchise tax...plus, california has a $800 MINIMUM on taxes

all in all, i plan on getting their $200 package, have a registered agent for deleware, and have it rushed...$497...most of the cost comes from the registered agent bit

what kind of company are you trying to start?

It's a simple website that will bring in small amounts of revenue via monthly subscriptions. I would just like some liability and identity protection, hence the LLC.

I don't have any experience with such companies. I've started LLCs, Subchapter-S Corporations, C Corporations, etc., and it's not a difficult process. In Colorado, you can download a single-page PDF form for starting an LLC, fill in your name, address, and whether the management is vested in managers or members, and send it in with $50. The sales tax license application is slightly more complex, but not bad and you may not need one depending on your business. It's very possible that some states will even let you do it all online now.

$450 is pretty steep, especially considering that it takes just as long to tell them your name and address as it would to fill it out on the form.

Yeah, I wouldn't want anyone to know I run a porn site either. All my friends would bug me all the time to hook them up with the girls and would want free subscriptions.

It's easy to do it yourself if you are willing to invest a little time in research. I found everything I needed online. LLC and FEIN were both apllied for online. Cost about $130 in WI. $500 is rediculous for whats actually involved.

LLC Application Requirements for Texas compliments of Google.

Use that $450 instead towards web hosting, web design, etc.

edit - Damn wrong license well I was close!
$450 includes the registered agent. it could be about $100-300, BUT i need a registered agent in another state to avoid the anal taxes of California

Texas charges $325 IIRC for setting up corporations. You cannot get around those fees. If you pay someone to do it in Texas, charges can range up to $1200. I made the mistake of asking my lawyer to help me setup the corp. and he tried to charge me $1000 on top of the filing fees. I basically told him to stick it and we eventually settled on a much smaller amount. There really is not reason to not do it yourself, don't waste money on hiring someone to do the easy work for you like I did.

I have yet to find the correct application or figure out how to do this properly....I guess that's why most people end up paying someone else to do it.
