I have two different laptops I just bought. First ones I've ever had. One is a IBM and one is a NEC. Both Celeron 366s running win98. One runs a Li Ion battery, the other a NiMH. When I shut down both computers via windows, the batteries will go from full charge, to nothing when I start it back up. This also happens when I went to add new hardware, when it was almost done searching, the battery went from 80%ish to nothing.

Does windows do something to the battery? I've tried just hitting the power button, and it doesn't drain the battery on both. Or pulling the battery doesn't drain them either. One of the batteries are new.

Some laptops need to have the battery "reset". I really don't know how to do this, although the battery software in the Toshiba from 4 years ago would sometimes need to be reset. I believe this was done by letting the battery run down till the laptop powered off and then letting the laptop fully charge back up before turning it on. It can't hurt to try, plus cycling the batteries is good even if they are Li-ION. Check the manafacturers support site for topics on resetting the battery.

I've reset them already, and one was new. But it seems like a windows thing to me. The only thing in common with both systems is win98 and Celeron 366s.

I thought it might be a physical thing, until I ran the addnew hardware thing, and it completely drained the battery.
