Businesses Add 57,000 New Jobs in Nov.

<snips>
The nation's unemployment rate slipped to 5.9 percent in November, the lowest level in eight months, as employers added new jobs for a fourth-straight month.
...
U.S. companies added 57,000 new jobs in November, boosting payrolls by 328,000 during the past four months following a half-year hiring drought.
...
Holding down overall payrolls last month were the grocery store strikes in California, Missouri and elsewhere. The strikes accounted for 25,000 to 30,000 jobs being lost last month, the government said. The hiring of replacement workers helped offset those losses a bit.
</snips>

Yep - I guess that Cali-strike did have to get added to Nov's numbers. It's fine by me - I'd rather see it in the numbers now than try to delay the numbers.:)

With things going the way they are, Dean's list of complaint is going to get narrower as November gets closer. Pretty soon, Iraq will be the only card he has left. And that's a wild card (from his prospective).

You're a bit late CAD and where is your 500,000 jobs added?

It's also the Holiday Season. I know three Big Companies here in Atlanta that have held off announcing huge thousands of job layoffs until after January 1st.

12-5-2003 Stocks Sag on Weak Jobs Data

Stocks slipped at Friday's open after an unexpectedly weak monthly U.S. jobs report and a disappointing forecast from No. 1 computer chip maker Intel Corp. tempered hopes for a strong economic recovery.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That can't be, CAD is jumping up and down that jobs data is greatest thing since sliced bread.

Well, November and December are usually when corporate is most brutal about layoffs. This year, they've been adding. If you're right, then they've gotten more sensitive relative to the season. But if you're wrong, then the tide has indeed turn. Let's hope you're wrong.

No - actually my post thread was before anyone mentioned it in your "I'm DEPRESSED" thread.
And yes the numbers didn't hit the forecast - for precisely the reasons I mentioned. But they still were positive numbers, no? And obviously it didn't hit close to 500K because these numbers weren't as good as advertised:p It's simple math - really.

Now yes - stocks will take a bit of a hit today because they have been anticipating this all week. But yeah...I am still happy with the numbers. Look at Manufacturing jobs for instance - they only shed 17K jobs last month which is down quite a bit from previous months - showing that it is about to stabalize. Average income rose 0.1 percent to $15.46. But yeah - I don't see any reason to be positive

More Jobs are good, but the 57k was far short of the estimated 150k. It also should be noted that in order to keep up with population growth, 150k Jobs need to be added per month, so again the number is not impressive.

Retail lost 28K jobs.
Service producing however did gain 64K with 25K in healthcare.

So your premise is more than a tad flawed. Nice try though:)

The two new stores I see being built probably haven't hired yet.

It just the trend that I see.

Good paying jobs being replaced by lesser paying jobs.

Keep trying to chant that. The data however doesn't fully support it though.

-17K manufacturing
+25K Health Care

Guess what? Their average hourly wages are almost exactly equal. Hmmm.

Have you ever thought that those places are hiring people new to the work place? Do you also stop and consider that they all aren't minimum wage jobs? No - you just sit and chant about creating lower paying jobs to replace higher paying ones. Did you miss the part about Average income rising 0.1 percent to $15.46?

Ferocious: So the people who will be working at the Wendy's and Wal-Mart will quit higher paying jobs to go there?

to be fair and balanced...
good or bad in my case i like to dig deeper at the headlines; for example most polls conducted have less than 1000 people polled; yet, most people see polls every day in the headlines, and all they remember is that the 90% percent of the people either love or hate the president.

Is sad to say but i don't think most news outlets are too reliable.....i'm no economics guru but i'm sure if you want good news to support your cause, you will find them; if you want bad news to support your cause, you will find them too.... but to be really informed, you need to look at both sides and determine for yourself what's really the good and bad news!

Good God.....these type of store generally pay LOW wages.

Just take a look around in the real world.

Get away from the computer once in awhile.

And? Is there not a demand for the things these places provide?

Just because these jobs are being created doesn't mean that they are related to the loss of "good paying jobs".

It's a nice little chant and all but it's more than a tad hollow. But it does do one thing - it continues to show that people feel they have to talk down the economy or find the bad in it so they can try to use it against Bush. What's bad for America is good for the democrats....or that's how they are positioning themselves.

CAD's in training to take over Rush's Radio spot.

I suppose in your bizarro world you are in training to take over Tom Daschle's spot then, right?

I think Daschle has got to be one of the worst Senators in history.

I had more respect for Thurmond than I do him.

Here comes the Healthcare Layoffs:

12-5-2003 Layoffs at Grady Hospital

Grady Health System, which serves 2.8 million people and includes Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, will lay off up to 300 employees early next year, or close to 6 percent of its work force.

Dave is wrong yet again...

Payrolls Lower Than Hoped, Factories Jump

U.S. employers hired far fewer workers than expected in November, U.S. government data showed on Friday, though the gain was the fourth straight monthly increase and the unemployment rate fell.

--------------------------------------

Looks like the gains were less than expected, but there were still gains. This is bad news for Dave, because it actually shows job growth. He will only be happy when all of America is unemployed.

While I certainly welcome any positive economic news, I'd really like to see a few more quarters like this one before I raise the "huzzah" and start high-fiving everyone around me. Unemployment dropping from 6.0 to 5.9 is a start, but a slow start.

What do you want? An overnight drop from 6% to 5%? I'm sure you do. What baffles me is the complete lack of understanding on how the economy moves. It moves slowly. The fact that unemployment is dropping means that the economy is headed in the right direction. Where will it be 6 months from now? I can only hope better and Dave can only hope worse. What I do know is that if we continue to follow these trends, the economy will continue to improve.
