do these HD channels broadcast a lot of HD material? while I'd love to see this for myself, I have a feeling that this huge lineup that DTV has been rolling out is a bit fluffy. It may broadcast HD, but tons of the programs aren't in HD. like watching reruns on Fox HD. Seinfeld, Simpsons, etc...

Well, I'm sure the sports channels are HD...

It depends on the channel. At first FX was horrible about showing stretched material. Now they are showing it in HD. The Sci-Fi channel is showing all their major shows like Stargate and Eureka in HD but I don't know if their B, C, and D movie line-ups are in HD or not. I don't watch them but I'm guessing no. Other channels like TNT, History Channel, Discovery Channel, etc are doing a good job showing HD programming. Meanwhile, I don't think I've seen a single HD program on the Cartoon Network.

and with all of the new channels DTV put up a new satellite, correct? so is the overall HD signal way better than their original one?

Yeah, all the new HD channels are coming from a new satellite. The video is encoded in mpeg4 and looks miles better than older HD channels which were encoded in mpeg2. Another satellite is going up in the first part of next year to support even more HD channels. The capacity for the current satellite hasn't been reached though.

I would say the biggest problem with more and more channels is the lack of true 1080 content. Most is 720p or lower.
Discovery and history are good for the 1080 content though.

They count locals in that.
So the count is a bit padded.

yeah, I remember seeing their initial announcement of 80 new HD channels (or whatever it was) They included every local sports channel they offered, which means for the individual user, only 1 of those (maybe 2?) would actually be available. Cuts the actual listing in half, at least.

By what, 5? They've added 46 national channels. They had 9 national channels before that. There are 5 local channels broadcast in HD (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and that other channel that used to be the WB and UPN). There's also a plethora of regional sports channels that they've added and thirteen HD PPV channels. There's also at least another eight or so channels on the way for the rest of this year.

The content isn't all there yet from the various broadcasters but that will improve as time goes on.

Its more than 5.
Everyone does not get the same 5 local channels.
Each area gets its own locals, so thats 5 per local area market.
Regional sports channels are the same way.

Unless its a channel that is available to everyone, without limitations, I don't count it.

Looking at DirecTV's page, they only claim the four big national local channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX).

Directv is doing the same thing all content providers do, brag about number of channels, when actual content is nowhere near that.
