More hard drives = slower computer?

I just got 2 externals (western digital 500gb) via USB and it feels like my computer is running much slower. Also one of the drives goes into sleep mode every hour or so and its annoying cause i keep having to turn the button back on, the WD Rep said try plugging it in a surge protector and it would be fine? I'm hella confused lol

The WD MyBooks have an auto power down feature that turns the drive off if you don't use it for x duration of time. The slowdown you're experiencing is happening because the drive has to kick back on (when you access it) & that causes the system to slowdown. I don't think plugging it into a surge protector will fix the problem. Turning that auto sleep mode off will.

I'm looking at the WD support section and theres a software called "Spindown or Stop Utility version". Is this the software I need to download in order to stop the sleep mode?
