Well in Bismark, ND the police department wants to arm school resource officers with AR-15's. I know there are mixed feelings about this but I remember going to school when no cops or guns were needed.

I find this degeneration to be very sad as it seemingly spirals out of control and don't subscribe to this mindset. Perhaps their SWAT team should be stationed around the city in close proximity to their schools for a rapid response instead of this.

It doesn't really matter to me what weapon(s) the police are carrying, if you harden one point it just will refocus efforts of evil people to a different attack vector.

Pardon me. Since I do not live in gun nut country and we get by with just some old retired guy with a name tag to handle school security, I'm just trying to get a sense of the local culture over in North Dakota.

Remind me again why the power of a AR-15 is needed over a regular sidearm like a 9MM?
Are they expecting mecha robots to invade?
It's North Dakota. How many "ter-ra-reest" are going to invade the school?
Is there a threat that South Dakota might try and invade North Dakota and take all their white women?

Is body armor readily available in North Dakota for sad faced murder chidren to wear before they go and shoot up the school because of 4chan dare? Is that why resource officers are in need of body armor?

Is North Dakota thinking this through? Shouldn't they also get armor vehicles just in case?

Based on current census data, there are 15 people in North Dakota. The remaining handful of residents only have a PO box there and treat North Dakota as their vacation home.

Isn't weed a big thing among North Dakotan's? Isn't everyone there too chill to be bothered with shooting up schools?

I think this is just a ploy by the resource officer community in North Dakota to get new guns to play with so they can justify some gun range time and maybe some wicked cool active shooter training.
Paintball\Airsoft gets kinda boring because the damn kids that flood the joint whenever you get the guys together to agree on a date to play.

edit: Sorry to Tom, Carl and the other guys can't remember their names) about the old retired guy comment. You are not old. You still have pep in your step. It's just a figure of speech or something.

Where do you live?

Why does what some ND school deems acceptable for school protection seem to bother you so much?

Doesn't really bother me at all.

Am I not allowed to respond to topics with flare?
Do you go through life doing things in the missionary position with the lights off?

How specific do you want me to be with where I live?
I'm not comfortable giving you my home address.

Police in Bismarck, North Dakota, want to put AR-15 rifles in some schools so school resource officers can respond more quickly in the event of an active shooter.

North Dakota's struggle with its expanding waistline continued last year, when the state's 32.2 percent adult obesity rate ranked ninth highest in the nation.

Average age for resource officers falls in the mid 40's

I think these should also be on their shopping list if they want to "respond more quickly in the event of an active shooter."

Why would you want a rifle in a potential close quarters battle? Also, the last thing you would want is some flunky "spraying and praying" around a bunch of students.

Not only that, but the 7.76mm round the M-16 (AR-15) fires moves so fast that will most likely take out any shooter, pass right through him and take out a couple of kids in the next room.

Law enforcement usually go for .223 when deciding on ar15s.

7.76 is for savages and people into beastiality

Flunky? Spraying and praying? School resource officers are almost always cops. Unless the shooter is closer than about 7 meters, I would take a rifle over a pistol any day. Controlled, accurate fire is much easier with a rifle than with a pistol, which becomes quickly useless at any real distance.

The AR-15 platform most commonly comes in 5.56mm or .223 caliber. With a soft point or hollow point bullet it is rare for it to over penetrate. It's the weapon of choice for a cop over a pistol if available and they have time to get to it. The main advantage of a handgun is that it is small, light and easy to carry. Unless the shooter is within that 7 meters, there is never a reason to use a pistol if a rifle such as an AR-15 is available.

You need to get a grip and stop exaggerating about things you really aren't very knowledgeable about.

Do you mean the 7.62mm, like what an AK style rifle is commonly chambered in? That's basically a .308 caliber, which is the round the military adopted in the M14 rifle when they downsized a bit from the .30-06 in the M1 back in the late 50's. It's a shorter case, which saved on brass and supposedly fed better in a semi-auto weapon.

It has relatively light recoil for a medium caliber round. Very common for hunting deer and other medium sized game. You can get it in an semi-auto AR styled rifle, too, usually called an AR-10. I have a bolt action .308 for hunting.

A 5.56/.223 was considered too light for hunting deer for a long time, but with modern bullets, proper loads, accurate bullet placement and within it's range limits, it's now considered acceptable, if at the lower end what an ethical hunter will use. It's a good round, but not anywhere near a powerhouse caliber.

I meant 7.62 but viper1j said 7.76 so it got stuck on my retina and I subconsciously typed it out.
