More G80 Details

Yes yes, I know it's the Inquirer but I found it an interesting read and a lot of it does sound plausible.

On a negative note the new AA modes appear to be similar to the Parhelia's Fragment AA which doesn't sound very good. Still, I really don't care as long as nVidia doesn't touch their existing 8xS and 16xS modes.

i wish i understoo more of that technical stuff..............so wil this card make any existing games look anybetter?

"Performance is CPU Bound
Yes, you've read it correctly. Both GTS and GTX are maxing out the CPUs of today, and even Kentsfield and upcoming 4x4 will not have enough CPU to max out the graphics card ? G80 chip just eats up all the processing power that a CPU can provide to them.

Having said this, expect fireworks with AMD's 4x4 platform once that true quad-core FX become available."

I don't agree with them... Conroe is well fast enough, the whole "cpu bottleneck" myth is really getting on my nerves.

I dunno, 128 shaders and 36.8 million pixels per second requires a lot of CPU power.

I agree that it will not take a quad-core FX to max this card out, but I can easily see it being bound by the Conroe... at first.

it'll only be bound by the cpu (if at all) untill crysis and elder scrolls 5 come out. or untill you play oblivion at 19x12++++ resolutions

I dont agree with any of the cpu-bound nonsense that gets passed around every time a shiny new big bad card is about to be released. There are a number of games such as Oblivion that already put a world of hurt on high end cards at a 1600x1200 resolution, and if you increase the resolution even higher, the g80 will be no exception; even more so if you add all the eye candy features available like TRAA, of which few review sites are even aware.

Moreover, a quad core cpu will be no better than a dual core until games really take advantage of multiple cores and add cpu-intensive effects such as high detail physics. For now, even a second cpu core goes to waste in the majority of current games.

See this is what I have been wondering. I do not want to spend my cash on the 8800 if my 3800+ is going to be limiting it. However, I would assume currently at my native res that I am still GPU bound in most games.

Not only that but the games would need to be recoded to make use of 4/8 cores to see any benefit of more cores. More cores will help where more cores are being used by the software but other than that it's just hot air that you don't need.
