More fun with G3258 and H81 OC (yeah, still have parts)

So, I recently (tonight) built another G3258 rig. Yeah, old tech by now. But this one was my best sample yet. I was able to boot and run Windows 10 at 4.4Ghz, at stock voltage. But sadly, not stable under OCCT.

So, had to drop multi down to 43x, 4.3Ghz. Bumped voltage to 1.280V. Not too shabby.

It's fun to compare the CPU-Z benchmark results.

This little dual-core, is equivalent in performance to half of an FX 8-core, in MT, and like double a core, in ST.

Edit: Temps are definitely an issue, which is why I didn't push for more clock and voltage. It's in a SFF case, that doesn't have a fan, I don't think. At least, I don't remember connecting it. (I guess I should check?)

Larry, which motherboard did you use this time? Man the G3258s were fun little chips a few years ago. Intel basically threw us enthusiasts a little bone back then. LOL.

They tried doing the same with the i3-7350K but nah, most enthusiasts did not want that haha.

I used this Biostar board. Got it off of Newegg on ebay for under $50.

It was twice the price! Value was a bit... lacking.

I've seen the 7350K selling for as low as $129.99. If that was the MSRP initially, I think that it would have caught on a lot better.

I want to get one (but don't really want to spend the money), to see if the multiplier adjustment on these Biostar B150 boards I picked up actually work. (Remember, officially, you need a "Z"-series board to multi OC. I'm thinking Biostar pulled off another G3258-style non-Z OC with the lesser chipsets.)

Edit: Anyways, I offered it to a neighbor for a few hundred bucks. They said that they were interested, but that they didn't have money in the budget for a while. Well, I'll probably have it for a few months, if I don't give them away first.

Yeah I should rephrase. Most enthusiasts wouldn't pay what Intel wanted for it at MSRP. I'd take one to play around with but at that price on launch I'd rather just get a Ryzen 5 1500X/1600
(Perfect for my little brother who still has my previous 3570K system).

I agree totally, which is why I have a few Ryzen 5 1600 rigs now.

Here's a thought: It seems that Intel segments their CPUs "just right", such that, except at the very top end, their overclockable CPUs, once overclocked, only seem to "just" reach the performance of the next product up the stack.

With that in mind, might they introduce an unlocked 2C/4T Pentium, during the Coffee Lake generation?
Basically, an unlocked equivalent of the G4560 / G4600?

If they move i7 to 6C/12T, and i5 to 4C/8T, and i3 to 4C/4T, then an unlocked 2C/4T makes a lot of sense.

Then I did some informal testing (at low resolution) mostly with Fallout 4 and and a tiny bit with Deus Ex Mankind Divided using my R7 250X.

I consider the games playable (for someone with a casual gamer mindset).....but I do wonder if stuttering would be present if I used a larger card? (EDIT: I wonder if Windows 10 game mode would help out in this department?)

you can avoid (or hide) the CPU limitation/stutters in many games by using a low max FPS lock (like 30) or having a slow VGA
I don't think windows game mode helps, it might help on some rare occasion as service would start running on the background or something, personally I noticed 0 difference.

Yep, my R7 250X is certainly a slow GPU.

With that mentioned, I wonder how far up the chain OC G3258 could go? GTX 1050?

Finished Fallout 4 with the 4.3 Ghz G3258 and the R7 250X.......game ran fine even at the very end at the big battle.

When Fallout 4 first came out I tried a G3258 @ 4.5 Ghz with a GTX 970 and it stuttered like heck. Plus there were big dips in areas of downtown Boston to around 30-35 FPS. My main at the time was an i5-4690k. At stock with the same GPU and settings it barely dipped at all in those same areas - maybe 50-55 FPS. I'm sure a better GPU would help vs. the R7 250X, but that game just doesn't really care for the G3258.
