Ford Recalls 572,795 Troubled Focus Cars

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. said on Monday that it was recalling about 572,795 of its compact Focus vehicles from the 2000 and 2001 model years in North America because of potential safety problems including engine fires.

The world's No. 2 automaker said the latest recalls stemmed from two separate issues that could have safety consequences.

One involves a bolt in the front suspension assembly that can become loose and cause noise and vibration or, in a small number of cases, lead to separation of the ball joint, Ford said in a statement.

It said the other concern involved Focus vehicles with Zetec engines in which potential problems with the placement of a battery cable could result in smoke, wire melting or under-hood fires.

I dislike ford. But not as much as I dislike '94 Pontiac Grand Am SE's.

My grandfather has a 94 Grand Am. Its got to be one of the biggest pieces of sh-t in the world. I think he's put more money in repairs than the actual worth of the car. He's given up though in the last 3 years. They only drive it like once a week...

I used to think the Focus was a cool car, but with all of the recalls and warnings of engine fires and loose bolts I'd be scared just to ride in one nowadays. Ford really has some issues with that car.
Where is that car manufactured anyway??

Ford's slogan used to be "Quality is job #1" (is it still?). Judging from the dozen or so Focus recalls in the past 2 years, perhaps the new slogan should be "We'll get it right eventually"

Seriously, though, these aren't just minor issues forcing the recalls. These are "could cause engine fire" or "ball joint could fall apart" type problems! I'm surprised people are still buying Focuses.

I own a '99 European made Focus and it has been fine. It has never been recalled and I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

The European Focus recently even won an award for reliability

I stand by my earlier comments: I wish automakers would focus on improving their current model line before going overboard on new models that push the style envelope. Look at warranty and recall data from the dealerships, and make the next model year even better. Use computer modeling to predict defects. Work them out to give us the most reliable cars we can comfortably afford, and do this before you go off making new models that simply appeal to some visually.

I swear automakers make models only 80% reliable. Make them more reliable and they'll have to charge more for having used better components and workers. Make them less reliable and nobody will buy, they'll have lawsuits and mass exodus of loyal and first time buyers. There is a magic number that sells just enough to make money without too many people bitching, and they know this at design time.
