Please read last posts, I've run into more problems.

**Fixed Below Problems**

I am a beginner and am trying to create an Exchange server for my home network. Our current network is on a workgroup and IPs are through DHCP from my linksys router which feeds ATTBI cable. Exchange requires a domain, so I want to know how i switch it all. Do I assign IPs through the router or through the exchange server? Any help would be appreciated. I dont have a domain, like internet domain, this is more of a internal network, thanks.

You can do DHCP. I think its usually done through your Domain Controller. You will need to create a domain to do this (not domain.com type of domain, but a Microsoft domain). Atleast that is my understanding of these things. Read the documentation you got with your expensive software.

If your trying to run exchange2000 you will have to have active directory installed. Windows 2000 server or advanced server to run Exchange 2000. Let's start with that. Do you have Win2k server installed on the PC you want to install exchange on?

Ya, I've been up all night, kept messing up on stuff, reinstall, so on, and so far what i have is Active Directory and Win2k Server and SP2 installed, the DNS is localhost(i dont have a website, yet) this is mostly for internal stuff and learning. I've hooked up one other laptop to the domain, internet is working, using dhcp on the router. I'm installing Exchange now, and i;m worried this is where somehting will go wrong.

Do you mean to say you named your DNS zone "Localhost" ?
What is your Active Directory named? Look at the top of the Active Directory User's and Computers page.

Ok, i have it all installed, but now i have a new problem. I am accessing my domain and using outlook with another computer on the network and it is incredibly slow, loading outlook takes several minutes. The server is an old 400mhz computer, is that the problem? Is that not enough for win2kserver and exchange server? I can install on a different, better computer but dont want to do that without knowing that the problem is in the computer for sure. One more question, how do I set up an Instant Messaging Server?

well if its slow starting up outlook then it is the client computers problem, if its a problem receiving mail then it is an exchange/server problem. i would say 400mhz is prob enough if it has enough ram for home use with a small number of clients but if this is going to be used by a large number of clients its definitely not enough, exchange can be a major ram hog.
