More energy: 30 min of exercise or 30 more min. of sleep?

My energy level has been pretty low lately.. So low that the people around me are noticing (I'm like a dumb blond lately, stumbling on my words and such)... I think part of it must be my body adjusting to a low carb diet and part of it must be that I just can't get more than 6 hours of sleep lately. My question is this - should I be waking up early to do 30 min or so of brisk running on the treadmill or is it better to just have those extra 30 min of sleep? I know that working out is supposed to help you focus and increases your energy levels, but is it really a 1:1 correlation (in other words, 30 min sleep>30 min exercise or 30min sleep<30 min exercise).. Thanks guys...

p.s. while I am low carbing I'm doing EVERYTHING right this time - salad with every meal, 200+oz water a day, watching my calories, taking supplements (especially potasium), etc...

get more exercise. In the long run, it will make your body more efficient and you will have more energy.

i find I have much more energy if I wake up and work out. It gets the blood flowing and the brain fully awake. If i had slept for another 30 minutes, I would still need boot up time as it were to get motivated throughout my day. Besides, if you run in the morning, you dont have to feel bad if you take a nap later on since you have already worked out.

Very valid point about not having guilt during the day... Actually, that's an excellent point.. Almost enough to convince me :) Though I'd still like to hear more input.. Thanks guys... Waking up early does sound like a good idea...Though I'm having trouble living on 6 hours of sleep.. 5 and a half might be torture.. hmmmm.

it will be for a week or two. But you'll get used to it and your body will begin to have more enegry to operate on. Worth it in the long run.

Well, I think I'll just thank you for the bump while ignoring your advice...
Good day sir..

:D, couldn't have said it better myself. I can't stand ignorance...

To answer your questions, try to get more sleep! Even 1 or 2 more hours will make a world of difference! I used to get only 5-6 hrs of sleep a night and just recently switched to a 11pm - 6:30am schedule and I feel much better. I have more energy and I almost never feel sleepy.

I'm also on a LOW (not NO carb diet, theNEOone) and it will help your energy level after just a short amount of time. I have SOOO much more energy with high protein than I ever did eating carbs. Stick with it!

ah, yah...ignorance that's it. i'm probably in better shape than any of you fat asses so how about you take your atkins and shove it up your ass. i was a fatass - used to weigh 220lbs when i was 15. last year i was at 7.5% body fat and a standing heart rate of 42bpm. i think i know what i'm talking about. you want more energy, so you sleep less and workout more? how about you think real hard about this one....get back to me when you get some common sense.

freedomsbeat212, can't you do both? Can't you hit the sack a few minutes earlier at night? Or do your workout in the afternoon?

theNEOone... I weighed 217lbs just a few months ago. Started eating on a low carb plan, and exercising regularly. I now weigh ~175 and feel great. WHAT IS SO BAD ABOUT WHAT I AM DOING??? What is so bad about freedomsbeat212 doing something similar? Why knock a guy when he is trying to improve his life?

Seriously... What's the point?

point? who said there was a point? and who says i'm knocking him? he's getting in shape, good for him. he asks whether he should sleep, or wake up early. i reply that he should sleep, if he wants to recoup some of his energy. the atkins debate is a secondary issue. if it works for you, great. but the idea of a low/no-carb is ridiculous to me, particularly because he's concerned about his energy level. that's my opinion, and i'm going to express it. of course though, i'm the ignorant one

freedom's equation for success:
less sleep + more exercise + less food = more energy

Hey,
I'm going through a pretty hectic semester so going to sleep earlier is rarely an option.. I can take naps during some days, but other days I have classes from 8 am to 10pm (plus I have an hour commute and I have to spend time studying too)..So, yeah, time isn't something that I have an excess of... That's why I can only really find time to exercise if I cut the amount of sleep that I have (p.s. I work out about 45 min a day during the weekends)

Ah yes, I remember those days well.

Another (somewhat related) suggestion for busy people trying to get in shape... Find things in your normal day to burn fat/calories. Some pretty good examples are: Take the stairs everytime, instead of the elevator. Park on the top floor of the parking garage instead of closest to the front door. Stand instead of sit. Stretch periodically while you are standing. Bike to the store, instead of drive. Things like that.

Good for you, but it's quite obvious that you don't understand the low carb diet. Protein will give you sustained energy throughout the day, rather than a short lived burst from carbs. Therefore, eating the right foods, can and does increase your energy level.

As for your less sleep = more energy comment, look at my damn response to freedomsbeat212... I said "get more sleep".... shut your yap and stop tearing people down!

yeah, i guess it's quite obvious......putz. food gives you sustained energy throughout the day, protein and carbs alike. you're thinking about simple carbohydrates that give a short-lived burst. i'm referring to complex carbs. hopefully you realized this, as nobody chugs down a hershey bar before going for a jog.

oh, and good suggestion with the 1-2 hours of sleep, considering that all he has is 30 minutes to spare.
