"My spy has offered a tip that discussions between Dell and
AMD may have progressed given the fact the chip maker has
been spotted shopping for land in Dell's hometown of Austin."

--Notes From The Field columnist Robert X. Cringely hears
tell that Dell is exploring the market for AMD-based PCs.

Dell is always looking at AMD. So that's nothing new. AMD already has a Fab and offices in Austin, so building another Fab there wouldn't exactly be news.

Considering that AMD already has a fab there in Texas, inquiries re: purchasing land mean zilch as far as indicating any deal with DELL.

That's not to say DELL will never build boxes with AMD chips, but you can bet your life that Intel will remain DELL's CPU of choice, for many reasons, the most significant being that DELL is moving on the server market big time, and they want OEM priority from Intel for their server chips.

Not to mention that it would sure hurt DELL to lose that fat "up to 60%" of advertising costs that Intel pays.

If you were DELL, would you sacrifice all this just to get AMD chips that might save you $30-50 at most on total system cost? Not if you were even a remotely astute businessperson ...

Yeah that's what I was thinking....so AMD looking for more land in Austin means what exactly?

Yeah...that's about what I though.

Well after all, it is important to have the chip supplier's fab in the same city as one of the OEM's that you are seeking... Isn't it? :D

Hey Chad, is this Robert Cringely fellow some sort of stock trader or analyst?

most companies dont give 2 $hits about cutting costs or providing another alternative for the consumer, in this case, as long as dell selling intel comps is generating signifigant revenue, they have no need to upset there niche.

Hey Pez, I really don't know who he is (hehe). This is just an ICQ message I got from a techie friend of mine. Dell gives us a %35 discount on all the system we buy from them (work at a big company) so I found this interesting.

Even though we are all Intel guys at work, I thought i'd just spread the AMD rumors around. Not saying AMD is bad or anything (actually may get one for my home system later) but at work, it has to be rock solid never even ever THINK about crashing or giving us any kinds of problems... otherwise our group could lose face (end users already go ballistic if we have to take our stuff offline for a few minutes for just a routine thing, couldn't imagine what would happen if we had to go down for something we had to figure out what the problem was). I know, it's wierd, but at my work... Sr. Manages and Directors FREAK about those kinds of things and we are held directly responsible. Thank God we code in Java!

Don't think too poorly of me though, all they used to run were Sun boxes, paying absurd prices for them too, until I convinced them to get some Intel boxs. Now we have 6 of them and only a few old non essential Sun boxes that we just run trivial stuff on.

P.S. Sorry if I made this out to be more than it is, I was just gossip'n with my "peoples" (you all) :) .

I'm sure your techie friend is really smart and good with computers, but he is showing typical ignorance by judging something (AMD CPU's) without even owning one for himself. Even if he were less biased, it would be much harder to convince ignorant sr. techs and management that AMD can be as stable as INTEL. AMD has an uphill fight with ignorance to get acceptance in the server market.

Uhm, my techie friend loves AMD.

It was my group who is the Intel boys and I concur with them at this point. In fact, it was mainly my recommendation that brought Intel box's into our situation, not his.

At the time, AMD solutions IMO had a few problems (quirks if you will) that I didn't feel comfortable enough in giving them as my choice for alternative solutions to the Sun box's.

I will say however, that since that time, they have seemingly become a safer choice, although I will wait until I have one of my own to deal with until I would go out on that kind of limb.

Intel right now is the tried and true "safe" choice. I'm not willing to take any chances. Right now, I'm looking good for saving our group so much money with the Intel solutions, and I'm not risking that.

In my group, there's always someone who has to answer for a problem.
