More crap reviews from Sharky...

The cheese-dicks over at Sharky decide to run what they title "Sharky's High End 3D Video Card Shootout". They choose about 6 cards based on the GeForce 2 GTS chipset (um... would one or two have sufficed guys??), a V5 5500, and the budget Radeon. Now given that this is supposed to be a "High End" video review, what possible reason could there be for these morons not to find a 64Mb Radeon with the 183/183 Mhz clocking?

I am getting tired of reading this kind of biased crap...

I long ago gave up reading Sharkey... his reviews are always bland and uninformative not to mention he often has a large number of errors in his reviews. Of course this isnt even touching upon his ver blatant and obvious preference for certain companies.

I totally agree. It is a crap review. It should be called the GTS roundup. I love this NON BIASES QUOTE:

"The Voodoo5 is a bare bones card with sub-par performance. If you play
Glide games a lot, it is the best card you can buy, or if you really want to
have FSAA in your old DirectX 6 games then its just fine, but if you want
leading performance or bang for the buck in non-Glide games, the Voodoo5 is
a dog."

Umm, Direct X 6 games. The idiot reviewer doesn't realize I guess that FSAA makes all games look better. Yikes, what a great report.

Yup, Sharky's was deleted from my favorites LOOOOOOONG ago. It is the absolutley most incredibly biased website I've ever seen. I will NEVER grace that junk site with another hit ever again.

Oh it gets even better. Did you notice that they put up a page of benchmark graphs FOR EVERY CARD. I don't mean different graphs, I mean the exact same ones. The set of graphs are repeated no less than 9 times in one article. Ridiculous.

I know what you guys mean. The day after I found Sharky's site I found Anand's. That was the last day I went to Sharky. The reviews are full of errors, extremely biased, and worst of all they don't tell you anything! A Voodoo5 as a DX6/Glide card only? Riiiiiigghht.

Because they only used a 32 MB GF2. They had to keep the video cards the same because the Voodoo 5 has only 32 MB of effective RAM.

BFG,

If it's a high-end videocard roundup, you compare the best card from each brand. That means a 64MB GeForce 2 Ultra, a 64MB Voodoo 5 5500, and a 64MB retail Radeon. Don't hold the other brands back because the Voodoo 5 only has 32MB effective memory...that's too bad.

The thing I don't like about Sharkey's reviews is that there is no Index to the various pages. If the review is 15 pages long you have to wade through all 15 pages to read the Summary. I don't always have the time or patience to do that so a Index would be a great asset.

at the very least he could have included BOTH 64MB geforce 2 and 64MB radeon. having 5+ cards that are essentially the same is just stupid.

This is because they want you to view as many ads as possible. They're a bunch of money grubbing people.

what do you expect. he doesn't run his own site anymore. its run by a bunch of writers and stuff. internet.com owns them. reading them is like reading reviews from pc magazine.

What he means by that is FSAA slows everything down and to get a decent speed on an average computer in new games you have to skip FSAA, on those old games (hinting that with DX6) its allready sooo bloody fast that it doesnt matter. Glide is dead.

Anyway, Sharky used to be my nr2 site right after anandtech, then they removed the news from the frontpage and I quit going there. I hadnt read a review there in a long time before that. What sharky needs is to put more information on each page and PUT A BLOODY INDEX UP for his reviews.

BTW, only 3DFX can make voodoo boards so you only get 1, GeForce sells their chips so others so you get unlimited boards.

Who cares... anyone "in the know" knows that SE is a joke. It was ridiculous when Sharky was in charge, and now it's only gotten worse since he turned over the reins.

I'm a big fan of Nvidia, but it's so damned obvious that they're biased in this review it makes me sick. Key points noted above and some new ones:

1.) They didn't review the retail 64MB Radeon.

2.) Who cares if Nvidia is only an OEM chip manufacturer and 3dfx is the only board maker for their chips. Anyone with half a brain would realize that non-OCed performance for all GTS is going to be about the same. Especially in light of the fact almost all review sites use reference drivers.

3.) Where's Matrox in this review? OK, the G450/G400MAX isn't the greatest, but it does fall in the price range.

4.) Sure people make mistakes, but they always seem to be trying to mislead people and obfuscate the truth. Their lack of integrity and overall greediness really shows in every aspect of their site (would it really hurt to put a friggin index in their seemingly 100+ page reviews). :p

The only reason I usually go there anymore is to check the weekly CPU prices... but now I don't even like to drop by because I know they'll get $$$ from the impressions my hits will produce. Even Tom's hardware seems like a bastion of integrity compared to these guys (I've actually put Tom's back in my favorites, he is improving a bit). In fact looking at that review was the first time I've visited there to view an article in 4 months and I removed them from my favorites long ago. I won't be back until they clean up their act and neither will many other enthusiasts I know.

I agree. But if he did this, people would think he is even more biased than they think he is now.

All reviewers should compare cards at similar price points.

After all, isn't money the real bottleneck in any of our systems?

Sharky's review was not called "The Best Video Card Costing X Amount" or "The Best Video Card With X Amount of RAM". I was called "Sharky's High End 3D Video Card Shootout".

In my opinion the Radeon rocks them all. I've been using a GeForce DDR since it first came out. If anyone, I would be biased. Not anymore. Just wait until ATI fully solidifies the drivers (I'm sure they'll do it this time).
